50 Year Girls Basketball Reunion
The 50 year girls basketball reunion was held January 6-7.  Alumni were recognized at halftime during the varsity game Friday and then held an alumni game on Saturday in the main gym.
E. D. White Catholic High School started varsity-level women's sports in the Fall of 1975. The program amassed 11 district championships and three state quarterfinal appearances during its existence.
Coach Jackie Francois was the first head girls' basketball coach. Mr. Gary Phillips took over the program in 1976 and led the Lady Cardinals to a district championship that year. Susan Dishman served as head coach for the 1977 season.  Coach Phillips returned to the post from 1978 to 1981, leading EDW to back-to-back district championships in 1979 and 1980, as well as an appearance in the 1980 State Quarterfinals. Mary Cavell took over as head coach from 1982 to 1986. Kathy Saichuk coached the 1987 season. Due to a lack of interest in the sport, girls' basketball took a three-year hiatus before Eddie Cole renewed the sport in 1991. Joe Casse coached the 1992 season before Jimmy Hill took over the program for the next four years from 1993 to 1997. In 1998, Marcey Zeringue was named head coach, and served in that position for nine years.
During the 2000s and 2010s, the Lady Cardinals captured district championships in 2001, 2004, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and made appearances in the 2013 and 2015 State Quarterfinals. The coaches during the 2000s and 2010s were Marcey Zeringue from 2000 to 2007 and current coach Darin Fontz from 2008 to present.

50 Year Soccer Reunion

The 50 year soccer reunion was held on January 14. Alumni were recognized during halftime of the EDW vs. Vandebilt boys' varsity game. Memorabilia was displayed in the Preston LeJeune gym and jambalaya was served. An alumni game was also held.

Since their inception in 1997, the boys and girls soccer programs have each won 10 district championships and made seven state quarterfinal appearances. Just last year, both the girls and boys teams set program firsts as the girls made their first appearance in the state semifinals, while the boys finished as the state runner-up for the first time in the program's history.

In just its second year of existence, the E. D. White boys' soccer team won back-to-back district championships in 1998 and 1999, while also making their first appearance in the state quarterfinals in 1998. Coach Alvin Mahler was named the first head coach of E.D. White Boys Soccer in 1997, where he stayed in that position for two years. Mary Cavell took over the boys' program in 1999.

In 1997, Coach Andy Roussell started E. D. White girls' soccer. Tim Thibodeaux took over in 1998, before current head coach Don Grabert was handed the title in 1999.

During the 2000s the boys' program won district championships in 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2009, and made appearances in the state quarterfinals in 2002 and 2004. Head coaches during the 2000s were Mary Cavell from 2000 to 2006 and Roger Bimah from 2007 to present.

The girls' soccer team proved to be one of the state's top contenders in the 2000s, winning seven straight district championships from 2002 to 2008. The Lady Cardinals made four trips to the state quarterfinals, coming in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. Don Grabert was the lone coach during this decade.

In the past six years, the E. D. White boys captured four straight district championships from 2010 to 2013 and made another four trips to the state quarterfinals in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016. The Cardinals made school history last year, making its first trip to the state finals, where they fell just short of winning the championship.

In the 2010s, the Lady Cardinals have brought home district championships in 2010, 2011 and 2014, and have also made three straight trips to the state quarterfinals in 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 2016, the E.D. White girls' team made the program's first appearance in the state semifinals.

50 Year Boys Basketball Reunion
The boys basketball reunion was held January 21 in the student union and then alumni were recognized at halftime in the varsity boys basketball game against Centerville.

In the Fall of 1966, boys basketball took the court for the first time as the E.D. White Cardinals.  The program has collected four district championships, four state quarterfinal appearances and one state runner-up title.

The head coach during the sixties was Brother Ralph McGarry from 1967 to 1969. Head coaches during the seventies were Duncan Crawford from 1970 to 1972, Jim Meza in 1973 and 1974, George Baracco in 1975 and 1976, Charles Miranda in 1977 and Skip Didier in 1978 and 1979.

The boys basketball program captured their first district championship in 1985 under then head coach Davis Kiger. Head coaches in the eighties were Skip Didier in 1980 and 1981, Davis Kiger from 1982 to 1986 and Pat Parenton from 1987 to 1989. Greg Stall, 1990 to 1992, David Gough, 1993 to 1995 and John Pere, 1996 to 1999 were the head coaches in the 1990s.

The E. D. White Boys Basketball program made a name for itself in the state of Louisiana in the 2000s and 2010s when the teams captured back-to-back district championships in 2006 and 2007, with another coming in 2010. The Cardinals advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history in 2005. Three other trips soon followed in 2007, 2010 and 2011. The 2007 E. D. White team made program history when the Cardinals made their first trip to the state finals, falling just short of the championship title. The lone head coaches of the 2000s and 2010s were John Pere in 2000 and current head coach Jonathan Keife from 2001 to present.

Senior Scores 1,000 Points

Senior basketball player Kevin Johnson is pictured with his parents and Coach Jonathan Keife when he was recognized for scoring 1000 points in his career.
Keife said that he was excited for Kevin's achieving 1000 points in his career. "It was nice that he was able to celebrate that accomplishment with his family, friends, and teammates. There is no doubt that he is one of the best basketball players to ever play at EDW. He has enjoyed a wonderful career and has been an absolute pleasure to coach. He deserves all of the accolades and recognition that he has received and will receive," said Keife.

Close-Up

During the week of January 16-22, a group of 57 E.D. White students participated in the Close Up Foundation's government studies program in Washington, D.C. The students participated in workshops centered around current political issues, visited Arlington Cemetery, the war memorials and monuments. While on Capitol Hill, they met with Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy. The highlight of the program occurred on Friday, January 20 when the students attended the Presidential Inauguration. The group was accompanied by faculty members Guy Guidry, Rebecca Pitts, Brother Ronald Talbot, Gwen Duet and Lana Daigle.

Student/Faculty Basketball Game

The annual student/faculty basketball game was played during lunch in the main gym on January 31 during Catholic Schools Week. The faculty played hard but the students came up with the win.
