Looking Toward Sunday-February 19, 2017
Sermon: Resisting Evil While Loving Enemies
Scripture: Matthew 5: 38-48

Lib McGregor Simmons will preach at 8:30 and 9:45 in Lingle Chapel and 11:00 in the Sanctuary

This Sunday we return to the vision of God's kingdom which is articulated in the Sermon on the Mount.  Once again, Jesus invites his followers into what may seem to be lives of impossible perfection:
If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also.
If anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as                   well.
If anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.
Give to everyone who begs from you.
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

On Sunday, we will consider how disciples in today's world are called to resist a paradigm of violence, hostility, and retaliation by refusing to engage in enemy-making.

The Geneva Choir will sing The Gift of Love at the 8:30 service.
The Chancel Choir will sing Even When He Is Silent at the 11:00 service.
Rusty Knox will sing Jesus Loves Me at the 9:45 service.

The congregation will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism  with  Winifred Blake Whalen, born February 19, 2016 daughter of Currie and Andrew Whalen of Chesapeake, Va.  Winnie is the great-granddaughter of the late Ann and Bob Currie, long- time members of this church and residents of Davidson.
