FEBRUARY TEACHER OF THE MONTHFTOM
Congratulations to Ms. Jardine for being name February Teacher of the Month

Ms. Jardine's teaching philosophy: A social studies classroom should be founded on building skills that go beyond the subject of history. The technological world in which we live provides us with information at our fingertips. It therefore occurs to her that the age-old adage used in history classrooms "who, what, where, when" is somewhat inadequate. Social studies should never be about memorizing facts, but rather thinking critically and generating educated conclusions about the world around us. Her philosophy of teaching is predicated on this ideal. In her classroom, she seeks to develop inquirers, reflectors and knowledgeable, open-minded analyzers. She works to enhance students' research skills in the search for new, intriguing, and relevant information regarding historical questions. She aims to develop students' skills of interpretation and their ability to present arguments that are clear, coherent, relevant and well substantiated. And she intends to develop students' appreciation for the perspectives, values and traditions of world cultures, while maintaining an appreciation for their own. These skills far exceed simple knowledge of historical events and establish skills necessary to be contributing, affluent members of society.
FEBRUARY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTHFEOM
Congratulations to Dr. Marsh for being name February Employee of the Month
Here is what people say about her: Dr. Marsh is a ceaseless advocate for the students of Milton in every imaginable capacity, whether it be social/emotional, academic, or even athletic. Her willingness to take on any task for Milton, for Fulton County, and for the Georgia Department of Education makes her not only an inimitable representative for the ideals of the Milton faculty, but also helps her to extend the Milton brand beyond the walls of the school. As a member of the State Math Counsel she has helped to guide math curriculum for the state; as a former staff representative on the Governance Counsel she helped guide Milton into the murky deeps of the charter program, and as a coach she helped guide Milton cheerleading to its first-ever top 3 finish. She is a great role model.
GRADUATION NEWSGRADUATION
The deadline for 2017 graduates to order caps and gowns before a $25 price increase is March 14. A graduation package (required for participation in the graduation ceremony) consists of a navy gown with embroidered Milton "M," cap, 2017 tassel, and diploma cover. The cap, gown, and tassel will be delivered to students in one package prior to the ceremony. Diploma covers are distributed during the ceremony. For those students who already have the required cap and gown, a package consisting of just the diploma cover and 2017 tassel can be ordered. Graduates who have not ordered and paid for a diploma cover (either as part of the graduation package or separately) prior to the ceremony will have their diplomas held. All orders should be placed online at www.gabalfour.com by March 14.
6 WAYS TO INCREASE CONFIDENCE IN ADOLESCENTS
Having confidence is a key factor in success. Confidence determines how a teen feels about themselves and how they interact with other people. Confidence "sets the stage" for how a teen will view the world and experience life. Parenting can be stressful and nobody is perfect. If you want to encourage healthy confidence in your teen, read and follow these 6 helpful tips:
  1. Create rules, but don't be a dictator It's important that teens have structure in their life. This encourages them to keep schedules and learn boundaries. But - don't dictate their every move. Teens need to learn to make their own decisions and set their own boundaries as well. Being overly authoritative shuts down independence and confidence!
  2. Celebrate them when they try something new Rewarding your teen with praise for trying something new is the best way to encourage the behavior in the future. He or she will feel acknowledged and proud for stepping outside of their comfort zone - this is where success happens!
  3. Express confidence instead of worry Telling your teen that you're worried about them gives him or her more reason to doubt them self. Express confidence and use encouragement instead.
  4. Turn mistakes into "teaching" moments Rather than criticizing or scolding your teen for a mistake, sit down with him or her and discuss what happened. Help them talk through the mistakes and problem-solve for the future.
  5. Encourage effort, do not criticize attempts If your teen is trying a new task or practicing skills, it is more helpful to encourage him or her and point out the good in what they are doing rather than pointing out mistakes. This teaches him or her to focus on positive things or negative things and increases confidence.
  6. Do not create exceptions for your child Create rules, boundaries, and guidelines for your teen. Then, enforce consequences when rules are broken and only reward behavior when necessary. Consequences teach your teen that they are not above established rules and boundaries. Making exceptions for him or her teaches feelings of entitlement and encourages the idea that they don't have to work hard for what they want and/or that rules don't apply to them.
