5) Redefining the meaning of "drone strike"...
Researchers at Virginia Tech - home to both a Federal Aviation Administration-designated test site for unmanned aircraft systems and a world-renowned injury biomechanics group - are developing methods to evaluate the risk posed by small unmanned aircraft to anyone on the ground.
This research is key to enabling flights over people. Federal Aviation Administration regulations for unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, currently prohibit these flights unless a special waiver is granted.

The regulations are designed to prevent injuries if an aircraft descends unexpectedly or the pilot loses control. But they present challenges for efficiently conducting operations that otherwise seem ideally suited for unmanned aircraft, such as package delivery and aerial journalism. And most applications face steep hurdles in densely populated areas, where it would be virtually impossible to ensure that there was no one beneath an aircraft's flight path.

The team has already begun the first phase of the project. Different unmanned aircraft are flown directly into a test dummy, mimicking what might happen if an aircraft accidentally hits someone. Sensors in the dummy's head and neck measure the force generated by the impact.

4) You need to read this amazing story...
Cody Ridenour was figuring out life. He had come up with a plan and had moved across the country to start living his dream.

But one misstep changed his life dramatically.

More than seven months after a hiking accident nearly cost the Hampstead native his life, Ridenour can't make himself a sandwich or get a drink on his own, and he's operating on a second-grade math level.

Still, compared to a dire early prognosis, Ridenour is defying medical odds, working hard as he attempts to regain what he used to take for granted.

3) What We Are Tracking that You Need to Know...
In the less than three years since the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative was announced, researchers have made measurable progress towards creating new tools and sharpening existing ones to study the brain. Though its goals are long-term, in a few cases this progress already has shown promise in helping people.

These tools “allow us to do things that, in the past, were unimaginable,” said Nora Volkow of the National Institute of Drug Abuse during the third annual BRAIN Initiative investigators meeting, held in Bethesda, Md., this week. For example, imaging tech such as fMRI and PET have enabled us to make maps of brain activity and create a brain atlas of the concentration of serotonin transporters and receptors. But to reach goals as ambitious as characterizing the many types of neurons and other cells in the brain—or even to get a good count of how many types there are—we need to improve both the speed and the resolution of our tools.

  2) What We Are Reading That You Might Enjoy...

“For the last two years, I’ve interviewed more than 200 world-class performers for my podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview. This unusual depth has helped make The Tim Ferriss Show the first business/interview podcast to pass 100 million downloads.

“This book contains the distilled tools, tactics, and ‘inside baseball’ you won’t find anywhere else. It also includes new tips from past guests, and life lessons from new ‘guests’ you haven’t met.

“What makes the show different is a relentless focus on actionable details. This is reflected in the questions. For example: What do these people do in the first sixty minutes of each morning? What do their workout routines look like, and why? What books have they gifted most to other people? What are the biggest wastes of time for novices in their field?

1) Quote We Are Contemplating...

“Most people are fast to stop you before you get started, but hesitate to get in the way if you’re moving.”                                                                                                                                                                             - Tim Ferris

"Partners in Progress"  on March 23-24, 2017,  is a multi-track  neuro- conference focusing on issues related to:  individuals with brain injury  and family members, children and adolescents in the school system, advocacy, and professional and clinical training. The purpose of the two-day conference is to provide state-of-the-art information about brain injury treatment, services, research, and advocacy and to improve collaboration and networking between individuals with brain injury, families and professionals.
