2-Star General speaks to Argo's class
|
General Marcia Anderson, along with a news crew from Channel 3000, visited BHS Social Studies teacher Steve Argo's class on Feb. 14 as a guest speaker.
Gen. Anderson is the United State's first female African American 2-star general. She spoke to the class about her experiences of being a black female in the US military and encouraged the students to seize every opportunity and "to never give up."
After her presentation, General Anderson met with students to answer questions, sign autographs and take selfies!

This week is School Bus Drivers Recognition Week.
This week is highlighted
each year to recognize the commitment to safety excellence of over 15,000 Wisconsin
school bus drivers, who drive over 82 million miles each year and transport over 600,000
students on any given school day.
Here are some fun facts about busses!
* The 1st "School Bus" was a horse-drawn carriage in 1827 in England.
* Before 1920, school buses had cloth curtains rather than glass windows.
* The 1st steel body bus was built in the 1930s by Wayne Co.
* Ever wonder why a school bus is Yellow? Yellow is an attention grabbing color. In fact, studies show that people notice the color yellow ov
er all other colors.
* Approximately 480,000 yellow school buses carry 25 million children to and from school every weekday.
* A school bus is the safest transportation on the road.

BELC Math Night adds up to family fun!

Baraboo Early Learning Cooperative students and families celebrated Math Night on Feb. 9 at West.
Students and families played math-related games in the West gym.
Thank you to all the families who attended, and all of the teachers who helped make this night possible!

Math Club at East Elementary
|
This year East third through fifth graders had the opportunity to be a part of the school's first math club.
The students met after school for 45 minutes and enjoyed socializing with friends while having fun building their math skills through choice activities.
The turnout was great and East School looks forward to having another month of math club next year! Options

Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month, we invite you to participate in Break the Cycle's "Real Week" as a way to break the silence about abusive relationships and talk about what healthy love looks like in your own life. These day-by-day activities can be fun and meaningful ways to start thinking and talking together - whether you're a
teen reaching out to a friend, a parent trying to check in with your kids, or a teacher wanting to bring a conversation about healthy relationships into the classroom.

Music is a great way to express yourself and sometimes songs can say everything you're thinking! What songs are on your relationship soundtrack? Create a playlist of songs that define you and healthy relationships. Use platforms like Spotify or YouTube and share it!

Arguing fairly can be tough, but it's possible. Today, practice "I Feel" messages and fair arguing methods. Here's a template for "I Feel" messages: "I feel (describe emotion)...when (describe behavior)." Tweet your best "I Feel" message to @breakthecycledv with #BTCRealTalk
February 22 - Wishlist Wednesday
It's important to think about the qualities you want in a person you date. If you made a wishlist for your relationship, what would it include? Make a list and discuss it or share it!
February 23 - Throwback Thursday
We can all learn from our past, both the good and not so good things. Are there things you wish you could say to an ex or someone from your past? Write a letter telling them three (3) things you learned from your relationship and three (3) things you wish you could have changed. After writing the letter, practice moving forward from the relationship by throwing the letter away or ripping it up, signifying that you no longer let those things define you.

Let's talk about getting down! Host a real talk or chat about the realities of sex, consent, and boundaries when you're hooking up, hanging out, or dating.

JYMS Choir had a Valentine's Day fundraiser of Singing Valentines for on Feb. 14. The theme was "I've got a 'Crush' on you."
The Singing Valentines were delivered to students during WIN time on Valentine's Day and Crush Soda was delivered during TA.

Community Book Club and BASCO Corner

 The Community Book Club met on Jan. 27 to discuss the book The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope by Rhonda Riley.
This month the club will meet on Friday, Feb. 24 from 9:20 - 10 a.m. in the BHS library to discuss the book The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown.
New members are always welcome and the club chooses the books they read together and are always open to suggestions!

Students and their families are invited to school to play some fun
math
games from around the world and learn more about our
math
learning resources right here in the Baraboo School District!
The kids will carry their "passports" around the school, collecting "stamps" as they visit various countries - many of which represent student heritages present in our school buildings.
It will be a fun-filled evening that showcases true school, family, and community partnerships!

Second Grade Science Is Cool! (And sometimes, it's hot!)
|
Mrs. Knipp's second grade class participated in a science experiment on Feb. 10 where they measured the temperature of water in two different cups - one hot and one cold - then dropped a sugar cube into each cup and recorded how long it took the cubes to melt.
The students found that the sugar melted faster in hot water than in cold water.
The classroom was visited by a news crew during their experiment.
The Madison news station will feature the class in a story on 1950 Baraboo High School graduate Corey Compton, who created an endowment fund to help the science programs at our local elementary schools.

The School District of Baraboo has announced the opening of nominations for the Excellence in Education Award (EIEA) and
the Distinguished Elementary Teacher Award (DETA) programs for the 2016-'17 school year.
Nominations may be made by a teacher colleague, an administrator, a parent of a student or a current or former student.

Madison College's Scholars of Promise
|
Attention BHS Juniors and Seniors!
Deadline is approaching for the Scholars of Promise scholarship from Madison College.
This scholarship helps motivated low-income students who want to attend college but aren't able to pay for it by providing funding.
Are you eligible? You must:
* Maintain at least 80 percent attendance in your senior year at BHS
* Carry a minimum of a 2.25 GPA
* Submit ACT or Accuplacer placement test scores by April 1 of your senior year
* Apply to a Madison College degree program by April 1 of your senior year
* Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 1 of your senior year. You must be eligible for both federal and state financial aid and your expected family contribution must be $3,000 or less.
Juniors, complete and return the SCHOLARS OF PROMISE ONLINE INTEREST FORM before the end of your junior year. You are also encouraged to take the ACT this year.
Seniors, in addition to our placement tests, FAFSA and degree application, you must submit your SCHOLARS OF PROMISE ONLINE INTEREST FORM no later than APRIL 1.

The Baraboo High School Chess Club and the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation have teamed up to host a Chess Tournament on
March 4th, 2017. Online registration is open now.. The tournament will take place at the Baraboo High School and be open to all K12 Students in Wisconsin. There will be a division for anyone in grade Kindergarten - 8th grade (K8) and a division for anyone in grades Kindergarten - 12th grade. (K12). To preregister for the price of $10 please go to
