At various times in my life I wanted to be a doctor, a lawyer, a politician, an actor, a musician, an athlete, an astronaut, a chef, and lots of other things. But to pursue any one of those paths with the necessary passion, I would have to give up all the others. Then I realized that the way to be all of them was to be a writer. As such, I can play in the World Series, walk on Mars, kill bad guys, be of a different sex or race, live in the past or the future. Or maybe forever.

Tommy Tomlinson
|
Tommy Tomlinson is a contributing writer for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com. He has also written for Sports Illustrated, Forbes, Reader's Digest, Southern Living, Garden & Gun, Our State magazine, and many other publications. He spent 23 years as a reporter and local columnist for the Charlotte Observer, where he was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in commentary. His stories have been chosen twice for the "Best American Sports Writing" series (2012 and 2015) and he also appears in the anthology "America's Best Newspaper Writing."
He's writing a book called "The Elephant In the Room" (Simon & Schuster), a memoir about life as an overweight man in a growing America.
He's a graduate of the University of Georgia and was a 2008-09 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
Tommy and his wife, Alix Felsing, live in Charlotte.

Introducing our Meet-A-Member for February: H. Landis Wade, Jr., A local guy, went to Myers Park High, majored in history at Davidson, and got his law degree at Wake Forest. He is a civil trial attorney, and arbitrator, and a mediator, but most importantly, he is a writer.
He has self-published two novellas: The Christmas Heist (2015) and The Legally Binding Christmas (2016). They are courtroom adventures, where the magic of Christmas is on trial and time is running out. They are available through Amazon, Ingram Sparks and several bookstores, including Park Road Books.
On a more serious note, he won the N.C. lawyer short story contest (I bet you didn't know there was such a thing) for The Deliberation, published in the Dec. 2016 edition of the N.C. State Bar Journal. In it, a fictional jury debates the fate of defendants accused of violating a statute similar to North Carolina's HB2.
He says he's learning important stuff from his critique group - as do we all -- and spends his spare time walking his dogs, traveling to fun places with his family, fly fishing, and playing golf, but not very well, he claims. But then, like all lawyers, he's very modest.

David Radavich will present a workshop called "
Polishing Your Poems" on
Saturday, February 4, from
10 a.m. to noon at Providence United Methodist Church. The focus will be on revising and polishing your poetry for contests and publication. Participants will discuss theory and examine "before" and "after" poems. Bring a poem to revise. The cost is $30 for Charlotte Writers' Club members, $40 for non-members. To register go to
