Registration is now open for Heartland's Summer Camp and weeks are filling up fast! If you haven't registered yet, now is the time. This year we are offering 11 weeks of summer camp for youth ages 8-13.  Campers who register for two or more consecutive weeks will have the opportunity (but are not obligated) to participate in Heartland's groundbreaking research collaboration with the  UW School of Human Ecology  to explore how our rescued animals benefit the kids who take care of them!  Learn more about our summer camp...
Announcing: Animal Hearts Spring Session!

Heartland Farm Sanctuary invites children ages 8-12 impacted by trauma or loss to participate in our weekly  Animal Hearts Kids' Program a fun, supportive, engaging group at our barn. Our Spring 2017 session will start Thursday, April 20th and run for 8 weeks, ending on Thursday, June 8th. Each weekly session will be held from 4:30 - 6 PM at the Heartland barn.  Cost is $40 per child.

Our staff and volunteers have discovered firsthand how Heartland's animals lift our spirits, provide gentle companionship, and offer us the opportunity to give back . Each of our 70 rescued animals - goats, pigs, llamas, sheep, and more - have their own stories of challenge and healing. Our animals are healthy and well-socialized, and enjoy contact with people of all ages.  Children who have experienced trauma and loss can especially benefit from this relaxing, fun time to just be kids in a supportive group environment.  Confidentiality will be maintained. Those interested in participating in Animal Hearts can contact Executive Director Dana Barre at [email protected] or 608-219-1172.

We are also looking for co-facilitators for this session! If interested, please contact Dana.
New faces at Heartland: Meet Claire and Tera!

Claire DuCharme, Heartland's new Programs Manager

We recently welcomed Claire DuCharme to the Heartland team as our new Programs Manager.  After receiving a graduate degree in Rehabilitation Psychology from UW-Madison, Claire started her career working with students with disabilities at UW-Whitewater. She took a tour of Heartland in 2014 and fell in love. When she moved to Milwaukee, she sought out opportunities in environments similar to Heartland, and started volunteering at other local animal shelters.  Claire's experience with animals and people make her the perfect person for the job & we are so happy to have her on board. And with a new Programs Manager comes expanded people programming, so stay tuned for updates!

Tera Runde, Heartland's new Ambassador

Tera began volunteering at Heartland in February 2014 and her regular shift evolved into training and animal enrichment. She particularly loves working with the mini pigs and llamas, but is in the process of helping all of the animals get more comfortable being handled for veterinary care. Tera has helped with tours in the past and especially likes leading tours with young children. She is now leading school and public tours on the farm as well as promoting Heartland in our community. Tera especially loves being known as " Percy's human" and taking him on field trips to businesses and schools.

Volunteer of the Month: Tony Torres
Meet Tony, our February Volunteer of the Month! Tony has close ties to Heartland - his daughter is our Shelter Director, Alecia. But that's not why he's our Volunteer of the Month - although Tony is a relatively new volunteer, he is a hard worker who is up for anything! He works on building and construction projects around the barn and recently installed a heated water tank for our cows, Beau and Daisy (this was no easy task!) just in time for winter. He also spent countless hours on a cart for sweet Baine (who he has a soft spot for, but who doesn't?) Read more about Tony...
Good Egg: Tracy Henderson
Say hello to Tracy, one heck of a "Good Egg" for Heartland! Tracy started as a Stable Supporter and animal care volunteer, and now is one of Heartland's Volunteer Coordinators. This means she's in charge of responding to all of the volunteer applications we receive, collecting all paperwork, answering any prospective volunteer questions, and much more! It's a big job, and we're so thankful to Tracy for everything she does for us.  Read more...
Good Egg: Chicago Vegan Foods
This month we want to say thank you to our friends over at Chicago Vegan Foods. Not only do they make delicious plant-based treats like Dandies marshmallows (yum!) and Teese (delicious melty cheeze!), they also regularly come out to our barn for work days! And boy do they work! We know you guys are busy, but we want to thank you for making time for all of your animal (and people!) friends at Heartland. We appreciate your support!
