HSMSS update
Thanks to all who have signed up to present at or attend this year's two High School Marine Science Symposia. Both events were filled in record time by both presenters and students!
SCHOLARSHIPS
This year, we are extremely pleased to announce that over 25% of attendees are supported by scholarships from the Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach, Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Program, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, Massachusetts Marine Educators, Boston SCUBA, East Coast Diving, and a number of individuals.
It's not too late to make a donation to support the participation of students from low-income communities in this event! The cost per student is $13, and you can make a gift of any amount
here. Any funds not used in 2017 will be carried over to the 2018 events.

Register now for the Annual Meeting and Conference at WHOI
Please mark your calendar for MME's 41st
Annual Meeting and Conference in Woods Hole at WHOI's Clark Building, Quissett Campus, which will be held on Saturday, April 8th. Keynote speakers will be Ken Kostel (Web Science Writer/Editor) and Kara Dodge (WHOI Guest Investigator).

Marine Art Contest is open
The annual MME Marine Art Contest is now underway, and the theme for this year is "Exploring the Marine Biodiversity of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary."
There are five contest divisions: K-4, 5-8, 9-12, scientific illustration, and computer graphics.
Winning entries will be posted on the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary website (
http://stellwagen.noaa.gov), as well as used by the sanctuary and MME in their outreach programs. Notification and certificates will be sent to the participating teachers or individual students at their schools.

The winter issue of MME's quarterly newsletter,
F&J, is
available here. The theme for this edition is seaweed and marine algae.
Submissions are now being accepted for the Spring edition, which will focus on Marine Protected Areas.

nnual Clinic and Career Opportunities in Marine Science Symposium
- Join the Boston Sea Rovers for this fantastic event, which runs March 10-12.
Educator Workshop on the Boston Harbor Habitat Atlas
- The Museum of Science, Northeastern University, and the Encyclopedia of Life are hosting a free half-day workshop on March 18 to introduce a digital resource, the Boston Harbor Habitat Atlas, and to get educator feedback on its most effective use in the classroom. All grade 6-12 educators are welcome, particularly those in metro Boston's coastal communities. Click here for more information and to register.

Cohasset Center for Student Coastal Research is hosting a State of the Watershed Community Forum on April 6th from 6:00-8:00pm, and all are welcome. The event will feature students presenting their work as well as a panel discussion and community dialogue about resilience and identifying projects for further study.

Workshop on the Massachusetts STE framework -
Join the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Museum of Science to learn about the
MA Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) framework vision, Science Ambassador program, engage with the science and engineering practices, discuss the implications for curriculum and instruction, and discuss potential ways we can all support educators and districts during this time of transition. Ocean Literacy Webinar Series - Join one of the National Marine Educators Association's ocean literacy (OL) webinars this winter. The series features topics such as exploring and applying the OL scope and sequence, alignment of the OL framework with NGSS, and implementing OL at different scales

MITS Professional Development Seminar Series

NEAq Educator Workshops - The New England Aquarium is offering workshops for educators during February school vacation week, as well as on a series of Saturdays throughout the spring. 2017 Bow Seat Competitions are Open
- There are two programs this year: 1) Bow Seat's annual Ocean Awareness Student Contest with the theme of "Ocean Pollution: Challenges & Solutions," and 2) the new
Marine Debris Creative Advocacy Competition, which
challenges middle and high school students to implement real-world projects in their schools and communities. Click here for more information.
Summer Teacher Institute - Salem Sound Coastwatch is holding an educator institute from June 26-30 on Place-Based Watershed Coastal Ecology that connect science topics to local places and helps participants prepare students for outdoor experiences. Click here for more information.
Coastal Studies for Girls is now accepting applications for its Fall semester. This full-semester residential program is open to girls in grade 10, and offers intensive leadership and science training on top of regular academic offerings. Click here to learn more.
Applications for the President's Youth Environment Award (PYEA) and the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators (PIAEE) are accepted through March 1. The PYEA award recognizes outstanding environmental projects by K-12 youth, while the PIAEE award supports the professional development of environmental educators.
