A Note from the Principal
Dr. Tim Anderson
Course Registration Season Continues
at South View!

In the book, "What Smart Students Know" there is a categorization of subjects taught in schools based on the type of thinking and studying the course demands. Does your student understand that the types of thinking in one course may not be what is required in another? For example, some subjects require more interpretation and analysis, (Language Arts) and some require problem solving (PLTW, Physics). Some courses require creating, performing or communicating (Art, Music, World language) and others require organizing information and making sense of it (History, Geography).

Of course there is overlap in all the subjects, but knowing what type of thinking is predominant can assist a student in preparing mentally for the type of work one is being asked to do. It also can assist in the course selection process for next year. Students should take courses that interest them, but balance those choices with courses that challenge them to think in different ways. One must be practical looking at the course time and work demands with outside commitments also. In considering an enriched or AP class, students must ask themselves if they are ready. Each course presents different thinking demands, time, energy and intellectual resources.

Students should also consider the amount of outside reading required. Balancing the total workload is critically important. For students heading to the high school, you might think about an online course or a blended course to experience a different learning environment. For students entering grades 6-8, you might consider electives in core areas, and electives in engineering, fine arts, FACS and business. This is a great time to explore opportunities, learn to balance time and workload--all very important skills for high school and beyond.
