Information Technology: A Competitive Necessity or A Competitive Advantage?
by Terry Wilk, MBA | Senior Vice President at Coker Group

I was talking with a few executives recently about their information technology (IT) systems and the staff that support these systems. In one way or another, all of the executives expressed disappointment with their systems or staff or both! Overall, they felt that their IT systems and organization were falling far short of their (and the Board's) expectations. Notable comments emphasized the ongoing slowness and unreliability of their IT systems, the high cost to purchase and maintain their IT systems, the lack of interoperability between their IT systems, and the unfriendly and invisible IT employees assigned to support these systems. In essence, the executives felt that their past investments in IT and staff were made out of a competitive necessity rather than to create and sustain a competitive advantage.
Benchmarking to Perfection
by Frank Allen | Senior Associate  at  Coker Group

In the last three years, hospital ownership of physician practices has increased by 86 percent. Coker's financial consultants have been busy helping hospitals, health systems and medical practices align their services together and ensure that payments to physicians are appropriate and market-based. Further, as the growth of hospital-employed networks has proliferated Coker has been called upon to assist in the standardization of compensation and the development of compensation models that allow for success in both the fee-for-service and fee-for-value environments. One of the most powerful and robust tools that we have at our disposal is market benchmark data. Coker uses benchmark data, along with other resources, to ensure that compensation models are market-based and compliant with industry regulations.
