National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month
February is National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. This is the month we all need to come together to spread the word on the importance of spaying and neutering our pets. Spaying female animals and neutering male animals is the best way to reduce companion animal overpopulation, and reduce the number of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens that end up as strays on the streets, or homeless in shelters.
Did you know, that
having your pet spayed or neutered can eliminate a considerable amount of stress on both you and your pet? Also, your pet can be spayed or neutered as early as 8 weeks old. In addition to helping curb pet overpopulation, spaying or neutering has health benefits for pets. It can reduce or even eliminate medical conditions such as testicular cancer, uterine infections or mammary tumors. It also helps eliminate behaviors such as aggression, roaming and urine marking.
Having your pet altered before they are six months old reaps all of these benefits.

Are you income disadvantaged and own pets? Some residents that live in specific areas of the county qualify for free altering of their pets. From chihuahuas to pit bulls, friendly cats and feral cats; all could be eligible for this excellent opportunity.

Be My Valentine Adoption Special
This Valentine's Day find "the one" for you. On this special day, the adoption fee for cats 1 years old and older will be reduced to $25 and dogs reduced to $100. Come find your perfect match!

Feb. 23 is National Dog Biscuit Day
Billy is always looking out for his buddies at the shelter. He knows how much the dogs love their biscuits!
On National Dog Biscuit Day, Billy is hoping that you think about these dogs and cook them up some dog biscuits. Store bought treats are welcome, but even better would be homemade treats.
So, heat up your stove, get out your rolling pin, gather your ingredients and have some fun cooking up some wholesome dog treats! And oh yea, a cat treat or two would be appreciated also!

Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month
Instead of buying a rabbit, how about adopting one or two from a shelter or rescue. These bunnies need a loving forever home and will be grateful that you have chosen them.
Bunnies are very social animals and want to be kept indoors with their owners. Bunnies from a shelter or rescue will be altered before being placed in a home. Spaying or neutering improves litterbox habits, lessens chewing, and decreases aggression issues.
Your bunny will be a happier bunny because of it. Give us a call to see if we have a bunny ready to hop into your life!

Volunteer Help is Always Needed
The shelter is in need of volunteers, age 14 years and older, to assist with caring for the many animals in our facility. There are several volunteer duties offered, including walking shelter dogs, spending time with the cats, taking photos of adoptable pets, general housekeeping, washing dishes and toys, cleaning kennels, and assisting with laundry. You can volunteer as little or as much as you would like.
Volunteer paperwork must be completed and submitted in advance.
Can't come to the shelter but still want to help out?
Come out to our adoption days in the community. The shelter staff will have animals available for adoption at various locations throughout the month. Come help get an animal adopted! Give the shelter a call to see if we will be in a neighborhood near you!

Tags and Licensing Are Required
Keep identification tags on your pet ... it could be your pets ticket to get back home. Both dogs and cats need ID. Be sure your animals wear a collar with an ID tag, a county license, and rabies tag. Also, don't forget to microchip your animal. Keep your personal information with the microchip company up to date. These identifiers could help your neighbor return your animal to you instead of taking him to the animal shelter.
Dogs in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's Counties must have a county license. Cats in Charles and Calvert Counties also require a county license.
To obtain a pet license you must have a current rabies vaccine for your pet.
