ACTIV8 LAUNCHES WITH SOLD-OUT PROGRAMS |
The highly-anticipated ACTiV8 after school program for 6th & 7th graders is underway. The program, based on the successful elementary school Get Out & Play program, provides opportunities for middle schoolers to try a new sport in a safe supervised environment on school early release days. Middle schoolers chose from Baseball with The Turf, Mountain Biking with Basin Recreation or Team Building/Ropes Courses with Utah Olympic Park for the first session. Registration for the second session is underway at www.ysaparkcity.org. YSA is in its eighth year partnering with the Park City School District (PCSD) and local venues to provide students with the opportunity to try various sports through the GO&P and ACTiV8 programs. The program has since expanded from a learn-to-ski program offered in January to a year-round program offering: Alpine Skiing, Archery, Bouldering, Freeskiing/Freeride, Ice Skating, Mountain Biking, Mountaineering and more. ACTiV8's launch, made possible with pilot funds from Epic Promise, coincided with the start of the 2016/17 school year. YSA worked for a year with Ecker Hill counselors, students and administrators, Olympians, community venues, and Ecker Hill students to identify activities and program formats that would work best for middle schoolers. |

STEIN ERIKSEN YSA OPPORTUNITY ENDOWMENT REACHES $2 MILLION GOAL The Endowment reached its initial $2 million goal after a two-year fundraising campaign. This accomplishment was celebrated last month at a reception hosted by Deer Valley. Ted Ligety, a gold-medal alpine skier, Bob Wheaton, president and general manager of Deer Valley Resort, and Jim Gaddis, chairman of the Stein Eriksen YSA Endowment Committee were on hand to talk about the Endowment's namesake as well as the legacy the Endowment will provide to the community. At the close of the event, Bjorn Eriksen led the crowd in a traditional Norwegian folk song and a toast to his late father. The Endowment will provide local youth with need-based scholarships to help alleviate training, equipment and travel expenses as well as underwrite fee-waivers for participants in YSA's Get Out & Play and ACTiV8 after-school learn-to sports programs. The fund was established due to growing demand for support. In 2015/16, YSA awarded $43,000 in training scholarships to 65 athletes in financial need competing for affiliated teams. Additionally, 179 scholarships were awarded this year to economically disadvantaged elementary school students to participate in YSA's Get Out & Play after-school sports program. |
