Office of the Bishop Welcomes New Staff

The Office of the Bishop is pleased to announce the addition of two new staff. Pictured above, is Jean Kanaizumi, the new bookkeeper, and at right is Office Assistant, Sonny Liu.

Jean, who says she has "lived most of my life in Manoa," was a teacher at Pohakea Elementary School and also spent many years in the travel industry before deciding to settle down with a career in accounting. With her motto "live to eat," it is no surprise that her hobbies include traveling, shopping and dining out.

Sonny is no stranger to the Office of the Bishop. He has helped with several events during the past year including the PALM Conference and the Annual Meeting. He graduated from of the University of Hawai`i with a BBA in Personnel and Industrial Relations, and was most recently employed at the Priory and La Pietra. He continues to be a dedicated volunteer for a number of organizations.

Staying Informed & Involved with the Homeless/Houseless in Hawai`i
By The Rev. Alexander Graham
Following the considerable energy around the Homeless/Houseless conversations at our Annual Diocesan Convention, a group of passionate folk from around the diocese met during the first week of January to ponder what to do next.

We know that many throughout the diocese are wondering the same thing - and here are two things to consider:

April 29, 2017: IHS Homelessness Summit
The event is still in planning stages, but judging from past experience it will be enlightening, inspiring, and an important ecumenical step forward for advocacy. We plan to meet at some point during this summit denominationally to see what God is urging us to do as the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement in Hawai'i. More information to follow.

Housing Now
This is the major ecumenical group with deep knowledge working on this issue. The next meeting is scheduled for February 14, 2017, 9:00 AM at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Honolulu.

Stay tuned for more information and possible diocesan-wide events.

The deadline for high school youth to apply as a youth representative for the Episcopal Youth Event 2017 (EYE17) Hawai'i delegation, has been extended to Tuesday, January 31.

What's Happening in The Episcopal Church?

Announcements from around The Episcopal Church & beyond

Presiding Bishop: "I ask President Trump to continue the powerful work of our refugee resettlement program without interruption"
[January 25, 2017] Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has released the following statement:

Mark 12:31: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

Leviticus 19:34: "The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt."

Numbers 15:15:  One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the Lord."

Deuteronomy 10:19: "Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt."

On Saturday, the Washington National Cathedral hosted the National Prayer Service for the President, Vice-President, their families, and those who will be taking on the grave responsibility nominated to cabinet posts. Religious leaders from many traditions joined their voices in prayer and song, and while we shared our most sacred scriptures, we prayed for wisdom for all those who serve our nation. I affirm those prayers, and ask that our leaders listen to the powerful call to serve those who are most vulnerable in continuing to welcome refugees from around the world.

As Christians, we are asked to pray: for our leaders, for our loved ones, for our enemies, and for those who are suffering. Our work does not end with prayer: we also offer assistance to those who are fleeing persecution. We find homes for those who have been forced out of their homes. We feed those who are hungry. The refugees who enter the United States do so after experiencing violence and persecution undeserved of any human being, and they come to the U.S. with hopes to build new lives.   READ MORE

February 1: Church-wide Webinar
The Episcopal Church Welcomes Refugees
Episcopal Migration Ministries and the Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations are sponsoring an important webinar to discuss the basic root causes of refugee crises and to examine critical questions such as: who is a refugee; how a refugee is resettled to the U.S.; how resettled refugees benefit their communities; and how you can engage with local communities to welcome these new Americans.

The Episcopal Church Welcomes Refugees, a free, one-hour educational webinar, will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at 4:00 PM Eastern (3:00 PM Central/2:00 PM Mountain/1:00 PM Pacific/12:00 PM Alaska/ 11:00 AM Hawaii).

"Every day, hundreds of community groups, churches, families and individuals work tirelessly to provide a place of safety for those who have had to flee their homes because of war, persecution, or other violence," noted the Rev. Canon E. Mark Stevenson, Director of Episcopal Migration Ministries. "The Episcopal Church's ministry of refugee resettlement is rooted in our nation's longstanding history of serving as a safe haven for those seeking freedom from oppression. With more than 23.1 million refugees around the world, it is now more important than ever for people of faith to continue this tradition."

Leading the webinar will be Lacy Broemel, Episcopal Church Refugee and Immigration Policy Analyst, and Allison Duvall, Episcopal Migration Ministries Manager for Church Relations and Engagement.

Registration is required and is available HEREThe webinar will be available on-demand following the event.

Order Lenten Meditations by February 15
Episcopalians are invited to mark  Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday  on March 5, the first Sunday in Lent, with special prayers, bulletin inserts and a dedicated offering to support the organization's mission of healing a hurting world. Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. "I invite everyone across our Church, as our Prayer Book says, to the observance 'of a holy Lent by prayer, fasting and self denial,' and by works of compassion, justice and mercy, like those carried out through Episcopal Relief & Development."

Worship resources and a special planning guide for Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday are available for download HERE, where you will also find links to  a special Lenten Toolkit and  to order Lenten Meditations booklets and other materials from Episcopal Marketplace.
