Principal Notes                                                 January 26, 2017
Dear Families,

All Catholic Schools around the country will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week starting January 29th.  This is a time where we stop and realize what a wonderful blessing it is to be able to speak and live out our faith on a daily basis with our children. We can truly be disciples of Jesus living out the Gospel and witnessing to those around us.

This year's theme is "Catholic Schools, Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service" with a special emphasis on our rich Catholic Identity.   We will begin our celebration with our annual Chili Chomp and Book Fair tomorrow night.  Our Open House will be on Sunday from 8:00-12:30p.m. Please plan on stopping by to visit your child's classroom and our Jr. High Science Fair. Stop in the gym and listen to our band.  The Boy Scouts will be serving a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria from 8:00-11:00. Come join us! We will be giving tours to prospective families.  Please encourage any family who is interested in coming to St. Mary's to attend.  You are our best marketing tool - help us spread the word!  Click here to see all the great things that are happening next week.

February 9th is our second parent/teacher conference of the school year.  School is dismissed at 11:00. Conferences are from 2:00-7:00 that evening. Please use sign-up genius to sign up for a conference.

Join us tonight from 7:00-8:30 in the church atrium for part one of a two part presentation with Fr. Greg Greiten and Pamela Schmidt-Peckham, MSW, on "Technology, Pornography & Safety: What Every Parent Needs to Know."  Part two will be presented on February 23, 2017.

Recently, we received a check for $500.00.  It was a matching grant from a local company whose employee can get money for volunteering.  Please ask the company you work for if they match donations of time (volunteering) or money.  It might be as simple as filling out a form for your volunteer hours or cash donation.

We are looking for volunteer tour guides to help us at the Open House on Sunday, January 29th. We are really in need of tour guides during the early shift. A list of talking points will be provided for you. Please consider giving us an hour or two of your time. The sign up can be found here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c45aaaf23a13-2017

Open House - January 29, 2017
Please join us at the SMV Open House on Sunday, January 29th from 8 am-12:30  pm. Please help us spread the word by inviting your friends, neighbors and co-workers to attend, an invitation can be found below. In addition,  your assistance is needed to help showcase our school and highlight all the wonderful  things St. Mary's has to offer . We're looking for volunteers to be tour guides and greeters as well as current K3 and K4 parents to volunteer in those classrooms.  If you're able to help, please sign up using this link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c45aaaf23a13-2017 or contact Carrie Lennon,  carrielennon@gmail.com with any questions.

Six Flags Read to Succeed
Students in K5 through grade 6 are invited to participate in the Six Flags Read to Succeed program. After completing a reading log verifying six hours of reading, students earn a free ticket to Six Flags Great America. Please see the links to print the reading log and parent letter. All reading logs must be returned no later than February 27. Please contact Miss Benson in the library if you have any questions.

Elementary Forensics
We hope you have had a chance to read over the information packet that was sent home last week.  Yesterday, students had the opportunity to watch current Forensics participants doing some of their favorite Forensics pieces.  Hopefully, seeing these examples will help your child decide which category to try this year. Registration forms are due on Monday, February 6th!  We really want as many 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to participate as possible.  Friday, March 10th will be our in-house Forensics Fest starting at 9:00am.  Coaching sessions will be offered after school on these Mondays: February 6, Feb. 13th, and Feb. 27th.  All coaching sessions will be held in the library from 2:45-3:30pm.  We are looking for parent volunteers to help out on these Mondays.  Please sign up to help at one of these coaching sessions on the orange registration form that was sent home to you!  The orange registration forms are due by Monday, February 6th. Any questions, email Ann Scott  asartini@yahoo.com  or Julie Perez

Chess
Chess will be offered at SMV through Chess Scholars this year. It will be on Fridays after school for seven weeks beginning January 13th. Please see the flyer located on the left under Home & School/Athletic/Community links for more information. I will continue to work with DJ Richlen to have a competitive team as well. We will meet on Sunday afternoons to have practice for the competitive players, and we will attend the All-Catholic Meet at MU on Saturday, March 11th and the Grade Level Meet at UWM on Saturday, April 4th. Please sign up here  https://goo.gl/forms/VErpQM4lhevbx7iu1  if you are interested in the SMV Chess Team. Questions? Email me at  brigidharmeyer@me.com
Thank you, Brigid Harmeyer

Scholastic Book Fair Classroom Wish List
Each year at the Scholastic Book Fair, families have the opportunity to purchase books from the teacher wish lists. Teachers browse the book fair and select books that  could be used in the classroom. Look for the teacher wish list table and consider purchasing one of the books as a gift for your child's classroom. At checkout, tell the cashier that it is a wish list book. You will get a gift sticker to fill out and then we will see that the teacher receives the book. Thank you for considering this fun and easy way to enhance our classrooms.

Basketball Concession Stand Update
Remember when we were all so excited that the basketball games and therefore concession duties were canceled on Dec. 17? Well those games have been rescheduled. And even more games than were initially canceled have been rescheduled at St. Mary's. That means that some families will be assigned additional concession shifts. Those families assigned the new shifts will receive emails later today. Sorry.

On a brighter note, the basketball tournament that was supposed to be held at St. Mary's this weekend has been canceled, so there's that!

If you're ready to move forward in your grief journey and smile again, why not join our Good Grief Support Group?  Perhaps you could suggest Good Grief to a relative or friend. Sessions will be held on  Wednesday mornings, March 8 through May 24, in the Atrium Library, from 10-11:30 am.
Class size is limited. Registration is required. Contact Mary Sue at the Parish Office, 262-782-4575  or msprotz@stmaryeg.org.
