  Director's Letter

With this issue, we celebrate the close of a wonderful year, and the beginning of 2017. Every morning, I give thanks for being alive to see a new day. And every year, I do the same.

2016 wrapped up with a campaign to raise funds for the Pam Mitchell Memorial Patient Assistance Grants Fund. As you will read below, we met the challenge and received the entirety of a $1,000 matching grant to boot. In fact, we raised funds enough to cover our 2017 budget for patient assistance grants - enough to help subsidize the cost of biotherapy treatments for up to 10 uninsured patients.

We also saw 50% of our members renew their membership. If you have not yet renewed your membership, or if you are still considering joining the Foundation, please remember that membership dues cover the most important work we do - educational programs, our publications, and supporting the infrastructure of biotherapy.

So in short, I have many reasons to give thanks - thanks to you all - for a wonderful conclusion to 2016. I am hopeful that 2017 will provide us with opportunities to achieve even greater advances in biotherapy education and research. Please continue to join us along our journey, for together, we are BeTER.

With best wishes, always,

#GivingTuesday Success!

BTER Foundation wishes to extend a huge "Thank You!" to the donors that made this #GivingTuesday a success!  We reached our goal of raising $2000 for our Pam Mitchell Patient Assistance Grants Fund, made possible by your generous donations and the matching grant donated by an anonymous BTER Foundation supporter.  Thank you all!

C. Difficile Study

You are being invited to participate in a research project conducted by Kevin Garey, PharmD, MS from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Houston.  They are looking for subjects that have experienced C difficile infection to provide saliva for an ongoing research study.  The purpose of this study is to test whether certain parts of your immune system may help explain why some persons are more prone to get C diff or recurrent C diff.

Citizen Science on Social Media

Abstract: Health information available on the World Wide Web varies in quality, and consumers are deluged with sources offering questionable health practices. This concern is not new to medical librarians. Consumers actively seeking health information for their medical conditions seem to be migrating to social media sites to gain knowledge. These sites appear to be a promising new platform for medical librarians to disseminate quality information.
