Third Grade Connections
January 12th, 2017
|
|
Dear Third
Grade Families,
The children spent the last two weeks getting readjusted to the routine of school. They returned well rested and ready to take on the new year.
We appreciated the experience of participating in a Half Moon Bay history presentation at the Senior Center on Wednesday, January 11th. S
tudents joined with the Seniors to listen to members of the Half Moon Bay Historical society share facts and memories about our city's past.
Our next field trip will be on Friday, January 20th when the third grade travels to the nearby coastside bluffs to explore our local wetlands. Hilary Stamper, a Sea Crest parent, will be our guide and expert in this experience. Students will observe the characteristics of the land and habitat of local frogs.
Sincerely,
Your Third
Grade Team

What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Reading/Writing
Students have been learning how to write a strong paragraph with clear topic sentences, supporting details, explanations and a conclusion. This has been making the whole world of informational writing become so much clearer.
|
|
Math/Word Study
Third graders have been participating in guided math groups to review Place Value up to a million and addition with regrouping the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. Does your pair of glasses help you see your pear to eat easier? These are a few examples of our current homophone study.
|
|
Social Studies/Science
Students revisited their Hopes and Dreams for the middle of the year and started to set some learning goals and steps on achieving them. Along with our HMB history study, we are building background knowledge on the Wetlands.

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- What are two ways to add these numbers, 274 + 786?
- How does the making a "ten strategy" help in figuring out addition and subtraction problems?
- Why is it important to know how to write a summary?
|
|
- Thank you for supporting your child with reading daily and signing their planner!
- It would help improve recall of addition and subtraction facts to practice at home regularly.
