Social Studies
We will be kicking off Colonization!

Writer's Workshop
- Getting ready for Essay by generating strategies for possible essay entries.
- Observing and noticing the small stuff.
- Pushing ourselves to write longer and stronger.

Reading Workshop
- Identifying theme and author's message in our stories
- What evidence teaches us theme?
|
Innovation Lab
Creating chassis requires:
- Using a saw, drill, foam cutter, box cutter, glue gun.
- Brainstorming ideas.
- Solving problems.
- Negotiating.

Math/Science:
- Division has its own vocabulary.
- Below is a long algorithm that's logical and easy to use.
|
|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- What's the mental math strategy to divide 45,000 by 100?
- How should I divide 41,400 by 300?
- If I melt a bit of ice in a sealed bag, will the weight change after if melts? Why?
- If I dissolve a spoonful of salt in a cup of water, will the weight change? Why?
When your child reads, you can ask or say:
- Write down any words that may be tricky or they don't understand.
- What are some character traits of the main character? How do you know this?
- How has your character changed?
- What is the problem the character is facing?
- Do you have any predictions?
- Summarize what you've read so far.
Your child should be reading for 30 minutes each day!

Winter I Sports season is almost over!

We are collecting Fall and Winter I Athletics Photos for the yearbook! If you have some you'd be willing to share, please upload them to SmugMug.
It's very easy, just click here and drag your images.
Please wash and turn in uniforms at the conclusion of your child's Winter I Season.

Winter II Sports season starts next week!

If you would like your child to participate in a Winter II sport, y
ou must register them on TeamSnap:
Girls Basketball
or
Boys Soccer
.
Individual schedules will be on TeamSnap when players are assigned to individual teams. Your child will be placed on a TeamSnap team once they are registered and their teams are determined.
Games will begin last week of January and run through the second week of March, 2017. Click here for more information.

First Practice:
- 5th/6th grade: Tue., Wed. and Fri., 3:30-5:00 p.m. next week only. Please do not worry if your daughter cannot make any practice next week if it is due to a soccer game.
Regular Practice Days:
- 5th/6th grade: Tue. and Thur. 7:00-8:00 a.m.

This winter we will be submitted two teams into the league for Boys soccer, an official league team and a scrimmage team.
First Practice: Friday, January 20th, 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. in the gym.
Regular Practice Days: Both teams will practice together when practices are held.
- Monday and Friday mornings 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. in the Gym.

5th grade is looking for any games or blocks to actively engage the children during rainy day recess.
