President Signs Executive Orders Impacting Illegal Immigration

On 01/25/2017 President Trump signed two executive orders in an effort to curtail illegal immigration.

The first executive order, available for your review here, calls for the immediate construction of a physical wall on the southern border, monitored and supported by adequate personnel so as to prevent illegal immigration, drug and human trafficking, and acts of terrorism.  It also calls for the creation of additional detention facilities for aliens and the allocation of additional asylum officers and immigration judges at these facilities.  Further, it authorizes the hiring of 5,000 additional Border Patrol agents.  Funds will need to be appropriated to cover the costs associated with these actions.

The second executive order, available for your review here, focuses on prioritizing the removal of certain aliens from the U.S. who have been charged or convicted of criminal offenses.  It also authorizes the hiring of 10,000 additional immigration officers for this purpose.  The executive order also authorizes legal action against "Sanctuary Cities," and excludes anyone who is not a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident (green card holder) from the protections of the Privacy Act regarding personally identifiable information.  Funds will also need to be appropriated to cover the costs associated with these actions.

There were no executive orders signed that impacted legal family- or employment-based immigration today.
