Paula's Ponderings
Hello Chamber Members,

Have you purchased your Annual Celebration tickets yet? The event is Friday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Danville Country Club. Our committee is planning another fun event and we have some great winners for our Awards. Our slogan is Unmask the Possiblities  - with a Mardi Gras theme. And the entertainment is world class! The desserts are from our members and will be delicious!!  You don't want to miss out.  Call the office at 859-236-2361, ext.120 to reserve and pay for your tickets.  The deadline is Feb. 3.

Kyle Talente, Principal for RKG and Associates, the consultant for the Economic Development Partnership working on a new strategic plan for economic development, is in town for his third visit. During this visit, he is holding focus groups with businesses and organizations in retail/small business, tourism & arts, agriculture, industry/large business, utility representatives, the railroad, Bluegrass Area Development District and the boards of the partnership.  Tonight, he will meet with elected officials from all three communities and the Fiscal Court to share more information he has gathered since his last visit and begin to share information on the report.  This meeting is at 5:30 p.m. at Inter-County Energy and is open to the public, as well.

As part of a Centre Term course on Economic Policy, the Economic Development Partnership worked with Centre students to develop research and papers on local economic development in the Boyle County region. This week, Patten Mahler's students made their final presentations at City Hall. Topics included how to strengthen our workforce, create job opportunities, and bolster local and non-local visitors to our county and historic main street districts.   Each of the EDP partners had a small group of students to work on a designated project. The Chamber's project was " What are the main issues affecting workforce supply? " and the students focused on early childhood education. The title was " Low Risk, Common High Return:Investing in Early Childhood Education" by Centre students Ian Johnson, Hans Stromberg and Hensley Traughber. (pictured below). Read their report on page 18, and find all the reports here.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT - SAVE THE DATE February 21, 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the Boyle County Fire Headquarters on Lebanon Road. Planning meetings continue by t he Chamber's workforce development committee for a community-wide project to address improving "soft skills"/professional skills/employability skills among the region's unemployed and underemployed individuals. This meeting is a gathering of all community organizations and individuals who assist local folks with issues/needs which impact their employability.  The purpose of this first meeting is to take the initial step toward developing a concerted, coordinated community-wide effort to identify and seek solutions to the obstacles that impede individuals from obtaining and retaining employment.  This will be the first in a series of meetings to create and implement action steps by early fall.  Please consider attending this meeting, and share with others who should be at the table of this discussion and planning.

Boyle County Public Library - As part of a discussion with library staff as they begin their strategic planning process, I shared some of the needs of the business community. Watch for some information in the next newsletter that will share resources available to the businesses.

Sincerely,

Ian Johnson, Hensley Traughber and Hans Stromberg Centre Economic Policy students..
