Building the Future of FAU Ocean and Environmental Sciences
More than 130 faculty and staff gathered at FAU Harbor Branch in Fort Pierce Friday to help shape the future of the university's ocean science & technology and environmental sciences programs. Anton Post, Ph.D., HBOI's new executive director, led the day-long retreat that focused on the most complex and far-reaching research pillar identified in President John Kelly's Strategic Plan for the Race to Excellence 2015-2025.

The research retreat was the first step in "co-creating" and "designing" the pillar with input from faculty ... read more.

Seeking New Entrepreneurial Class to Continue Successes
The achievements of FAU Tech Runway start-ups are  sky-high. In just two years, the 29 companies have created 205 jobs and 76 internships. In addition, they have employed 39 FAU students; created 136 corporate partnerships; earned more than $8 million in revenue; and raised more than $19 million in investment capital.

FAU Tech Runway seeks to continue to build on that success with its 2017 Launch Competition that kicks off today. Selected participants will win $25,000 in seed grant funding, and the opportunity to be housed, trained and mentored for one year. Winners also will complete a 16-week course based on the Stanford Lean Launch Pad curriculum. The competition is open to faculty, staff and entrepreneurs in Florida. Members of the FAU community are encouraged to apply.  READ MORE

I-SENSE Research Fellow Awarded NIST Grant
The National Institute of Standards and Technology recently awarded a $132,769 grant to Reza Azarderakhsh, Ph.D., assistant director in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer  Science. The grant will fund Azarderakhsh's project called, " Design for Fault Attack Resiliency of Lightweight Cryptographic Architectures for Deeply-Embedded Systems."

This three-year project will explore devising secure and fault attack-immune architectures considering the bottlenecks of traditional security solutions for embedded systems. Azarderakhsh is a Fellow in the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering ( I-SENSE).

Centers Collaborate for Sustainable and Resilient Communities
The Center for Urban & Environmental Solutions and the Florida Center for Environmental Studies, both at FAU, are teaming up to resume the work of the award-winning Florida Public Officials Design Institute under a new name, FAU Incubator for Sustainable & Resilient Communities. The goal of this program is to develop action plans addressing complex land use and infrastructure problems.

The prior version of the incubator focused on offering elected officials unique no-cost training in urban design using a specific site in their community for study.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Drone Use at FAU
FAU's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office is drafting a formal university policy to govern the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, commonly known as drones. This policy will address drone operations related to research, academics and university business. Recreational drone operations on university property is strictly prohibited.

Email all questions to EHS, pending finalization of the policy. Include "UAS Approval Request" in the subject line. READ MORE .

Research in Action

Harbor Branch scientists led by Mike Twardowski, Ph.D. and Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., recently met with the NASA PACE Science team about a next generation imaging satellite that will provide a view of the visible and invisible color spectrum to monitor the biosphere based on chlorophyll distribution to help monitor the health of our oceans.
