Who Are You? Series: "Embody Beatitude Living"
The beginning of a new calendar year is a time when we often reassess direction and ask questions yet again about who we are and where we are going in life. We make resolutions, we sign up at the gym (again), we vow to be better people. This year we will take a deep journey into the question, "Who Are You?" We will discover that "who we are" is indelibly linked to "Whose we are." This Sunday we talk about the beatitudes... "supreme blessedness and happiness."

Our One Word for 2017: Refresh
by John Mollet
For the past two years, our one word has been "Caring." That word was chosen by our Compass Team and approved by the Administrative Board from a list of suggestions by the congregation. As one of the members of the Compass Team said, "Caring is who we are. It is a part of our DNA." That word spawned the "Get Caught Caring" campaign and helped guide our ministry for 2015 and 2016.
Now it is time for a new guiding word for us. Not that we will stop our caring; after all, how can you stop being who you are or change your DNA? No, we will continue to "get caught caring"... to care for the needs of those in our congregation, the people of this community and those throughout the world, particularly those in our four villages. In fact, now we will do that by REFRESHing our response to God's call.
REFRESH means to give new attention and energy to something; to reinvigorate your commitment and excitement. When you REFRESH your computer screen, it is an act of updating. It brings all the parts of your computer in line with one another. For our congregation, REFRESH means to reinvigorate our lives in God's call; to find new energy and give new attention to it. It means putting our lives back in line with God's will. Another word for that is "righteousness" or "faithfulness."
As I said in Sunday's sermon, being called is not a generic or abstract thing. We are called in a particular place, at a particular time and to a particular group of people. As Grapevine changes, we are called to REFRESH and change with it. Just before Jesus called his first disciples, he announced, "Change your hearts and lives! Here comes the kingdom of heaven!" (Matthew 4:17b) So, get ready my friends. The kingdom of heaven is coming. Right here in Grapevine Texas. REFRESH!

Serving From the Heart:
Finding your gifts and talents for service
With our sermon series Who Are You? and talk of our one word for 2017, REFRESH, are you feeling a stirring to understand better how you will fit into the future here at FUMCG?
Come embark on a journey by attending Serving from the Heart on Sundays, February 12-16, at 9:15 AM in the Family Life Center. Rev. Grant Palma and Bev Campisi, Volunteer Coordinator, will guide you to seek to discover and affirm for yourself certain biblical truths: You are uniquely created by God. God has given you significant gifts. God has a plan and purpose for your life. As a Christian, you have been called to serve.
Because we know that God's plan for the church calls for each of us to serve in a way that allows us to be effective and to feel personally fulfilled, we will start week one with a Spiritual Gifts Discovery Tool which after you complete, you will have identified your spiritual gifts. Week two will be an overview of how our talents, resources, individuality and dreams all work together for fulfilling God's call. Week three will outline how the areas of ministry here at FUMCG support our vision and how each of our ministry teams need each of the spiritual gifts we collectively bring to further God's kingdom here and now.
Will you let us know if you plan to attend so we can prepare materials for each of you? RSVP to Bev Campisi at [email protected]. NOTE: If you are unable to attend week one on February 12, please go online and complete the spiritual gifts discovery tool at www.ministrymatters.com/spiritualgifts.

Kenya Missions
Last week our Bishop, Mike Lowry, returned from Kenya with a mission team. During his trip, he blogged about his experience there. In one post, he gave a large shout-out to Grapevine UMC and the work that we have done in Kenya. We invite you to read the full blog post at
www.bishopmikelowry.com/conclave-and-kenya, but here is an excerpt:
I must give a special shout out to Grapevine UMC in closing. There is a "Guest House" (the Kenyan version of a Retreat Center) in Meru, Kenya (the center of Methodism in Kenya) named after Dr. Ken Diehm. I had visited it two years earlier and after our Pastors School presentation I got to stop by for a brief visit again. The work continues to go forward. Most of the 2nd floor is now finished and initial construction is taking place on the 3rd floor. For those who are from the CTC, think of the Diehm Guest House as their Glen Lake. I learned that follow-up teams from First UMC Grapevine have continued to come and work on the Guest House. What a tremendous blessing of faithfulness! This is truly a work of the Lord.
