    Day 1:
    Soggy Sandcastles:
Developmentally-Informed Play Therapy Theory and Techniques

Thursday, March 30th, Libby Center, Spokane

Tantrums are difficult to manage in a two year old and they are difficult AND confusing when they occur in a nine year old.  This training will explore various stages of development for children birth-12 years of age. We'll use this information to explore what happens when this development is interrupted, and how to use play therapy to support children in "growing up" into the best versions of themselves.  Crystal has developed a Sandcastle Model to assist with understanding how trauma, mental illness, relationships and resiliency, all play a role in a child's development.  This model can also be used to educate others, set treatment goals and to design interventions.  Participants will learn play-based interventions to address a wide range of symptoms and clinical issues, focused on topics such as feelings identification, coping and social skills.

Please note: If you attended either day of training in the fall with Crystal, this is a combination training of both of those days.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand various models of development and how these are used during play therapy.
  • Learn basic neurology of emotional regulation and how to identify dysregulation during play therapy.
  • Learn about the Sandcastle Model to understand the impact of trauma, relationships, mental illness and resiliency on child development and in tailoring treatment.
  • Practice play-based interventions that address concerns frequently presented with children in therapy.
  • Explore ideas about how to adjust play based interventions for individual, group and family sessions.

Day 2:

Non-Directive Play Therapy Theories and Techniques

Friday, March 31st at Red Lion River Inn, Spokane

Despite its profound therapeutic value, nondirective play therapy is widely misunderstood by the public and often an intimidating endeavor for play therapists. This workshop will provide a foundation on common theories that drive non-directive play therapy, along with interventions that empower your client to take the lead.  Play therapists will leave this workshop with a renewed confidence in their play therapy skills. Graduation or concurrent enrollment in a Master's level psychology program is a pre-requisite for this training.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about several theories of play therapy conducive to non-directive play therapy interventions.
  • Be involved in discussions regarding misconceptions and barriers to implementation of successful non-directive play therapy interventions.
  • Observe and practice non-directive play therapy interventions and process treatment goals addressed through those interventions.

Day 3:

Collaborating with Caregivers and Navigating the Choppy Waters: Play Therapy with Families

Saturday, April 1st at Red Lion River Inn

"It takes a village to raise a child." But what happens when a child's village is unavailable, due to custody battles, stigma or hectic work schedules?  This training is focused on addressing obstacles and building bridges with people involved in the client's life in order to increase the efficacy of play therapy.  Special focus will be given to working with caregivers in resistant and conflictual circumstances.  Through experiential activities, participants will practice a variety of play-based interventions geared at engaging the caregiver while improving the client's relational skills and resiliency.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn strategies for engaging resistant caregivers in the play therapy process. Participants will become familiar with what APT says about the play therapist's role.
  • Discuss how to protect the play therapy process when engaging the client's natural supports in therapy.
  •  Learn and practice play-based interventions focused on improving the client's ability to successfully engage with their caregivers.
  •  Learn and practice play-based interventions that promote caregiver involvement in play therapy.
