MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY - JANUARY 16, 2017
" The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example - the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King's character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit." - Coretta Scott King

I applaud the many Peninsula families who will spend Martin Luther King Day giving back and serving the community.  Please consider spending your day giving to others in honor of Dr. King's legacy.

"The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a beloved community."    - Corporation of National and Community Service
"If you want to be important, wonderful. If you want to be recognized, wonderful. If you want to be great, wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be a servant. That's the new definition of greatness. By giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Throughout today's update, I will be sharing some of my favorite quotes from Martin Luther King!

CHINESE LANGUAGE CLASSES PREPARING FOR THE NEW YEAR
Chinese New Year is approaching. One Chinese cultural practice before the Chinese New Year is to write spring couplets ( 春联 ). Chinese people express happiness and hopeful thoughts for the coming year by decorating spring couplets. Thank you to Mrs. Shirley Ho who brought red paper for students to write spring couplets and taught students how to write Chinese calligraphy. All students enrolled in our Chinese language program had the opportunity to write Chinese characters on the special red paper. Students will ask teachers at Pen High to put these spring couplets on their door or window .  Pen High looks forward to celebrating the Chinese New Year January 30 at lunch.  The community is invited to join in the celebration, but we do ask that you sign in at the Main Office before you come on campus.

  ROBOTICS COMPETITION SEASON BEGINS
The 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition Season Kick Off
Strategizing begins as the 2017 Game is Revealed

I. The 2017 Game is Revealed
On Saturday and Sunday afternoon, January 7-8, 2017, PVPHS Robotics FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 2637 began their 2017 Season Kick off. Each Robotics season starts off with the big game reveal. Teams all over the world have been awaiting this moment. At 7:00 AM PST, on January 7th, 2017, the video animation of the game was streamed live. The animation provides the game premise, scoring, and game field configuration. Excitement filled the Robotics Rooms (T-102 and T-103) as our team discovered what will surely occupy their hearts and minds for the next 6 weeks: STEAMworks, the game their robot must excel at in order to advance to the coveted National Championships!

Yep, you read that right! 6 weeks is the time that each team has to build a competitive robot for this year's game. To appreciate the task ahead of our robotics team, this next 6 weeks, here is the 2017 game animation video (click on the picture to watch):

II. Our PVPHS Students Begin their 6-week Build Season
Kick Off Day 1, January 7th:
The Robotics team approached this year's game with a new tactic based on lessons learned over prior years. They spent their pre-season learning and developing their skills in industry standard practices for systems engineering and are applying these to this year's game. Strategy discussions were preceded with thorough scoring and game rules analysis sessions. Small groups of 5 team members + 1 group facilitator developed their strategy based on the scoring analysis. Each group then presented their strategy with projected scoring based on their strategy. Spencer Gray- Team Captain, Aaron Lum-Vice President, Artie Levine-Rules, Strategy, and Drive Lead, and our mentors, did an amazing job facilitating the sessions and keeping the team focused on the strategy session goals. A strategy evaluation criterion (developed by our Rules, Strategy, and Drive Lead, Artie Levine) was utilized to evaluate each strategy presented. By the end of the 12-hour day, the team had refined the strategy choices to the 2 best. While strategy sessions convened, several of our build team members reviewed the game field specifications and began building key game components. These components will provide for accurate prototype testing and will allow the drive team to practice their driving/strategy skills with the final robot.
Kick Off Day 2, January 8th:
Day 2 was dedicated to building the game field pieces, creating the systems requirements document based on the selected strategy, and then beginning the design process. Small groups of team members were instructed to come up with a robot design that  met all the systems requirements and then present their designs to the team. Each submitted design was critiqued and questions were fielded to refine understanding and feasibility.

III. Game Overview
FIRST® STEAMWORKSSM, the 2017 FIRST® Robotics Competition game, invites two adventurers' clubs, in an era where steam power reigns, to prepare their airships for a long distance race.
Each three-team alliance prepares in three ways:
1. Build steam pressure. Robots collect fuel (balls) and store it in their boiler via high and low efficiency goals. Boilers turn fuel into steam pressure which is stored in the steam tank on their airship - but it takes more fuel in the low efficiency goal to build steam than the high efficiency goal.
2. Start rotors. Robots deliver gears to pilots on their airship for installation. Once the gear train is complete, they turn the crank to start the rotor.
3. Prepare for flight. Robots must latch on to their airship before launch (the end of the match) by ascending their ropes to signal that they're ready for takeoff.
The Game Field:
