Pilgrimage to Williamsburg

As told by Kathy Marsocci

How do you end a hectic year? You go to Colonial Williamsburg for Christmas!

Jeff, Monty, and I have made it our annual tradition. Colonial Williamsburg does a great job of making the holiday special. There are Christmas Wreath walking tours, holiday plays, and many, many  holiday-only events.

"Soldiers" at the ready. Ready, aim, fire!

Our favorite event is the firing of the guns and the community tree lighting ceremony on Christmas Eve. For 30 minutes the cast fires three cannons and five muskets while the band marches. Since this is done at sundown, the community tree lighting ceremony is next. The Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg co-sponsors this event with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

The speeches are limited, the community carols are fun, and it all ends with the lighting of the tree and a candlelight celebration.

Enjoying the crowds singing Christmas carols while waiting for the tree lighting.

Can't forget Monty. He was with us on Christmas Day. The weather was beautiful and Monty had a chance to walk around. He received tons of attention from the visitors and cast alike. His favorite part was climbing the fence while we waited for our tour of the horse stables.

By the time Christmas day was over we were ready to head back to Raleigh and relax in our bed. The rest of our vacation seemed to follow
a familiar holiday verse...

The Marsoccis were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Monty danc'd in our heads,
And me in my jammies and Monty in Jeff's lap,
Just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

... followed by two days of binge-watching Netflix.

New Year's Resolution:
Update Your Trust

Many legal documents -- including Trusts -- are not static. There are things that need to be routinely done to ensure that your documents don't become out-of-date and no longer reflect your wishes and circumstances.

During the past year have you...
  • Bought a home?
  • Purchased or updated an insurance policy?
  • Become affected by any legal changes that might affect your estate plan?
  • Had Any new additions or deaths in the family?

  • Had any financial changes in 2016?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then your Trust needs to be updated!

You need to know when new rule changes apply in order to take full advantage of them by keeping your Trust reviewed and updated every year. Changes would include...
  • New tax laws.
  • Charity and gift exemptions.
  • Changing financial markets.
If any of these changes have occurred, then your Trust needs to be updated!

If you haven't done so, NOW is a good time to transfer all new assets properly into the Trust and to review the transfer paperwork if you have added a new retirement account, bank account, home purchase, or had a beneficiary change.

Please call our office today at (919) 844-7993 and schedule some time with us to ensure that your Trust is current. After all, you spent good money to get the Trust, shouldn't it always reflect what you want?

Turning 65 -- Medicare Must-Knows

Medicare is great insurance, it just has a few holes and gaps

By Mike Brooks

Turning 65 this year? Congratulations and welcome to what I call the Mountain of Medicare!

If you are within six months of your 65th birthday you're probably starting to receive a newsstand of information from different insurance companies marketing health plans and supplements. A small shredder should suffice in negating this overload of information, or if you have a fireplace you'll be warm for the winter.

To keep things simple: Medicare has Part A for hospital insurance and Part B for doctor and medical insurance. You are entitled to Part A for free if you have been paying into the system for 10 years or 40 quarters. Part B comes with a premium and varies based on income. Most people new to Medicare will pay $134 per month or $402 per quarter in 2017.
