Staying In Shape: Maintaining Your Fitness Level During The Holidays

Like in any sport, soccer athletes go through three unique phases during the course of a year; preparation (preseason), competition (in-season) and recovery (offseason). While physical and mental rest are key components of the offseason, it is important that athletes do not lose fitness or "de-train" during this period of rest.

According to Active.com, muscle cells begin to return to their pre-training form after only 10-14 days of inactivity. If athletes go more than a month without enough physical activity, they also risk starting from scratch from a cardiovascular fitness standpoint as well.

So what is the minimum amount of physical activity that athletes must do to maintain their fitness level during the offseason?

  • Training Frequency  (number of days per week) can be reduced by 1/3 or 2/3 as long as the training intensity and duration stay the same
  • Training Duration (length of work out) can be shortened by 1/3 or 2/3 as long as the frequency and intensity of training stay the same
  • Training Intensity ( amount of physical effort ) can be lessened by 1/3 or 2/3 if the training frequency and duration stay the same

Stick to these guidelines and you will have a much easier time transitioning from offseason to preseason!
