Soccer Tournament Sportsmanship Award

Aly Flores, Maya Amavizca, Coach Caitlin Witwer, Ariana Toretta and Natalina Antongiovanni.
Each year the Garces Holiday Soccer Tournament Director, Mr. Vince Fanucchi, recognizes examples of good sportsmanship at the tournament with the Rick Martinez Sportsmanship Award.  Rick is from San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno and is the only coach to have participated in all 27 years of the tournament.  Over the years, the award has been given to players, coaches, officials (even a bus driver once) from all over California, but this year's recipients are closer to home.  When the tournament had to be re-scheduled, Garces boys' varsity soccer coach Justin Finch offered his JV team as a stand-by alternate team if they were needed and was always understanding as they were moved in and out of the tournament line-up as it was evolving over the holiday.  Later, when a team staying over-night asked if they could pick up an additional match on Friday, he graciously volunteered his varsity team in addition to playing his division schedule on Saturday.  Caitlin Witwer, our girls varsity soccer coach, was not able to field a team for the re-scheduled tournament because of prior commitments by a number of her players, but she and several of her team members ( Maya Amavizca, Ariana Toretta, Aly Flores & Nat Antongiovanni) showed up Saturday and worked all day collecting scores and coordinating field assignments all over the park as the day progressed.  Simply put, this year's tournament wouldn't have been possible without all of them.  So, with with Vince Fanucchi's special thanks, this year's Martinez Sportsmanship Award was awarded to  to Justin, Caitlin, Maya, Ariana, Aly and Nat.

Message from
Myka Peck
Principal

Dear Parents -

Welcome back!  I hope all of you had a blessed Christmas and enjoyed time with families and friends while celebrating the birth of our Savior. Over the break, I traveled to New York City to spend the holidays with my family.  While there, I went to the 9/11 Memorial and I was greatly humbled.  The issues we face at Garces can be challenging at times, but in comparison with the tragedy of 9/11 and all the families and victims went through, I am blessed.  As I shared with the faculty, I am lucky to have this job, to work with the people I work with, and to spend time with our students, families and supporters.  We have a wonderful school with a dedicated faculty and staff who are committed to our students.  I am looking forward to this semester and all the good things we have planned!

I am excited to share with you that in the very near future we will be opening the Mehnga Sanghera Collaborative Learning Center!  We just have a few things to complete and then we will have a ribbon cutting ceremony and bless the new space for the students.  We are working on becoming an official Apple Distinguished School and the learning center will go a long way towards making that possible.  We are very grateful to the Sanghera Family - Joti Culbertson and Raji Sanghera - for seeing the vision and deciding to make it a reality for our school.

We have a lot of other exciting things on the calendar as well:

January 25th - Fr. Nathan Cromly will be here.  He will speak to the students during the day and then will speak to the parents in the evening.  He is an inspiring and dynamic speaker who we are bringing in from Colorado.  He is well known for his uplifting talks and his ability to relate to everyone.  I hope you can join us. Be prepared to change your heart.

January 28 -  the Winter Formal is going to be a Great Gatsby theme and will be a special night for the students who attend.  The ASB class is working really hard to make it a magical evening.

January 30-Febraury 3 - is Catholic Schools Week and it is always a fun week to be on campus as we celebrate and thank those that make it possible for us to have a great Catholic high school in our community.

February 1 - is Signing Day for our student athletes who are receiving scholarships to play their respective sport in college.  It will be a big day on our campus as we have several student athletes who will be signing their letters of intent.

February 11-12 - the Junior Retreat will start with Mass in the chapel then the students will head to a retreat just outside of Frazier Park to spend time growing in their faith.

February 25 - the Garces Gala will be held in MLH and the theme is Bollywood.  Gala Chairs Raji Sanghera and Maria Toretta will undoubtedly throw a fabulous party and you don't want to miss it!  It is the largest special event on our campus and the funds raised support the students and their activities.

My door is always open if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas.  May there always be a Garces.
