A Student's Experience at the Conference

Over the course of one's academic adventure, a student often has the opportunity to attend an academic conference; however, many students struggle with the question of whether or not they should attend. Many have a preconceived notion that one must be presenting a poster or paper in order to attend a conference. Others wonder if their resumes are competitive with other attendees who may also be looking for jobs or internships from the companies exhibiting at the conference. Some other students believe that conferences are only for graduate students or those heavily invested in research. I personally have been to many different conferences over the course of my academic roller coaster. As a senior in undergrad, I attended the conference for the Biomedical Engineering Society in Hartford, Connecticut. I did not have anything to present, so I was simply embracing the conference experience as a way to learn about different opportunities for after I graduated. Currently, as a Ph.D. student in industrial and systems engineering at North Carolina State University, I have been blessed with the opportunity to attend numerous conferences, some in which I presented research and others where I did not. Dr. Rawson Challenge

At the 2016 HSPI Conference, Dr. Rawson challenged SHS members to quantify the value they are providing to health systems across the country. Members of the SHS Young Professionals/Early Career committee are leading the call to action by gathering and analyzing information from SHS Members and will deliver the results of the data collection and analysis at the 2017 HSPI Conference. In an effort to encourage submissions to this important initiative, we would like to offer a recognition reward to the top submission by an SHS member. A Razoo account has been set up to fund this recognition award; if you are interested in donating, click here.

The deadline has been extended to January 31, 2017! Find the data collection tool for the Rawson - SHS Challenge  here.
