The Cumberland Central Landfill has made it even easier for residents to stay connected with waste management collection and programs.
 
Download the free Solid Waste Mobile App by searching for Cumberland County Solid Waste in the App Store. Use your mobile phone to view collection schedules, receive collection reminders and  service alerts for any interruptions to waste collection such as cancellations due to weather. Residents can also sign up online by visiting www.cjsma.ns.ca .

Management Without Borders - Tidal Power Readiness Project
Dalhousie University masters students partner with the Cumberland Energy Authority 
Dalhousie University masters students, in partnership with the Cumberland Energy Authority, have conducted a review of tidal power readiness in Cumberland County. This study identifies local opportunities for tidal power in the Cumberland area involving economic development opportunities for residential and commercial development, land-use planning, and necessary infrastructure updates.

Sarah MacNeil Receives Academic All-Canadian Award
Academic All-Canadian honour awarded to Sarah MacNeil
The Municipality is pleased to announce that staff member, Sarah MacNeil, Active Living Coordinator in Parrsboro, has been awarded an Academic All-Canadian Award. This awarded is presented to varsity athletes who have received a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the academic year while competing in a varsity sport. Congrats Sarah!

Joggins Fossil Institute Receives Funding for ArtScape Artist-In-Residence Programme
Funding provided by Arts Nova Scotia/Support for Culture and the Municipality of the County of Cumberland 
The Joggins Fossil Institute is pleased to announce that it has received funding from both Arts Nova Scotia/Support for Culture and the Municipality of the County of Cumberland in support of ArtScape: The Artist-In-Residence programme.

ArtScape is an outreach initiative that invites visual, literary and performing artists to explore the relationships between the human experience and the natural world at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Canada's Volunteer Awards
Bring Recognition to Someone Doing Important Work in Your Community
The call for nominations for Canada's Volunteer Awards is now open, and we encourage you to nominate a not-for-profit organization, an individual/group of volunteers or a business.

Help celebrate Canada's culture of volunteering! You have until February 3, 2017, to give Canadian volunteers the recognition they deserve.

Award winners will be recognized at a ceremony and will be able to choose a not-for-profit organization to receive a grant of $5,000 (regional award) or $10,000 (national award).

Councillor's Corners
Councillor Lynne Welton would like to recognize and celebrate the success of the 2016 Wallace Country Christmas celebrations. 
The supper at the Masonic Hall, sponsored by the Order of the Eastern Star, Cedar Atlantic Chapter #3, was enjoyed by all. There was a good collection of crafts for sale at the Community Hall, along with a barbeque outside.  Councillor Welton would also like to thank all of those involved in the parade!
Country singer, Brad Kissel's "Kick It With Kissel" Quebec and Maritime Contest winners have been announced!
The acts selected to open for award winning country artist, Brett Kissel, on the Quebec and Maritime leg of his upcoming tour have been announced. The winners were selected from close to 100 entries vying to perform with Kissel through the "Kick It With Kissel" contest.
 
Participants were asked to record a video of them performing their favourite original, cover, or Kissel songs and to post it to social media using the "#KickItWithKissel" hashtag. The winners were chosen by a panel comprised of Country Music Association of Ontario board members, Invictus Entertainment, and Kissel himself.
 
One of the Nova Scotia winners is our own Chelsea Atkinson from Springhill! Chelsea will open for Brad Kissel at his Liverpool, Nova Scotia concert on January 26th, 2017 at the Astor Theatre. The concert is sold out! Councillor Maryanne Jackson would like to congratulate Chelsea on this exciting opportunity!
Councillor Don Fletcher is excited to announce the construction of an outdoor skating rink built by the Advocate District Development Association with funding assistance from the Municipality of the County of Cumberland. This outdoor rink is located near the Log Building on Mills Road. Once colder temperatures arrive, the skating rink will be ready for all to enjoy!

Grant Opportunities
Canada Summer Jobs
This program provides funding to help employers create summer job opportunities for students. It is designed to focus on  local priorities, while helping both students and their communities.

Canada Summer Jobs provides funding to not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create summer job opportunities for young people aged 15 to 30 years who are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year.

Your application must be submitted by 23:59 (Pacific Standard Time), on January 20, 2017.

Student Summer Skills Incentive (SKILL)
The Student Summer Skills Incentive (SKILL) offers wage assistance to non-profit organizations that provide quality, career-related summer jobs to students going into university or community college in the fall.

Non-profit organizations and Registered Charities are eligible to apply.

Applications for Summer 2017 close on January 27, 2017.
Annual Violence Prevention Grants
The Canadian Women's Foundation is now accepting proposals for 2017-2018 Annual Violence Prevention Grants.
Organizations can apply for one of the following types of grants:

A. Rebuilding Lives: Support women's organizations and programs in Canada to help women and children rebuild their lives after the crisis of experiencing violence

B. Loan Funds: Provide interest-free loan funds to women who have experienced domestic violence to aid them in becoming financially independent

We will select approximately 30 grants up to a maximum of $20,000 each.  If your organization and work fits the selection criteria, you may apply for additional funding of up to $3,000 to assist with access costs. 

The submission deadline is Monday, February 6, 2017 at 11:59pm PST. Proposals submitted after this date will not be considered.

Community Facility Improvement Program (CFIP)
Program Goals: 
* improve and expand existing community facilities operated by not-for-profit organizations; 
* improve the functionality and enhance sustainability of existing community facilities; 
* celebrate culture, heritage, and diversity 

Program Principles 
The program is intended to assist one-time projects that will enhance public access to a facility and encourage increased community use. 
The program is not intended to provide operational support.

The department's contribution will not normally exceed 75% of project costs and not exceed a maximum of $50,000. 
The applicant is responsible for funding 10% (minimum) of the total project cost.

The deadline to apply is February 28, 2017.

Hike NS Winter Guided Snowshoe Hike Series 2017
Hike Nova Scotia and 33 host organizations across the province have partnered up to offer the 2017 Winter Guided Snowshoe Hike Series in January, February and March. There are over 50 hikes led by local folks and participants qualify to win "trail prizes." Most hikes are free and require pre-registration unless otherwise indicated in the schedule.
