[SIGNALS exclusive] Government watchdogs said in a new report that schedule slippages in the new GPS ground system - which in October had another four months added to its repeatedly extended schedule - are more of a factor in delays to GPS modernization than technical problems with the satellite's payload. Satellite navigation signals from space are precariously weak and can easily be blocked, damaged, or compromised by a growing array of threats - including solar activity, man-made interference, malicious faking of GPS signals, and the manipulation of position and timing information. As we come to rely more and more on GNSS signals and data across a wide range of industries, understanding and mitigating against these threats will become a critical risk management activity for manufacturers, systems and applications providers, and end-users..

With the Republican Party now entirely in charge of Washington's prime policy real estate the neighborhood is going to change. The current residents are warily watching the newcomers take measurements for a major remodel of agencies, lobbying rules, national priorities, and international relationships, and everyone is assessing the implications of the new landscape.. Register to attend this IEEE-moderated webinar on sensor fusion and the promise of ever-increasing levels of sophisticated capabilities for unmanned and autonomous navigation. Featuring KVH and Geodetics, Inc., this webinar looks at the challenges of achieving successful sensor fusion, and how sensor fusion architectures can be designed to overcome these challenges. Discussion will also focus on examples of how sensor fusion is used to solve some aerial and mobile mapping application-specific problems. Register now.

The emergence of modernized and new GNSS systems has made possible the use of GPS signals combined with those from other constellations to support positioning and navigation applications above the orbits of GNSS satellites. ( more)
The incorporation of multiple constellations into satellite-based augmentation systems may lead to cases where more satellites are in view than an aviation receiver has tracking channels. This article examines methods for selecting the optimal set of satellites and further describes a method to specify performance instead of a minimum hardware channel capacity. This form of specification allows for greater flexibility in receiver design. Manufacturers would be allowed to choose between more channels combined with a simpler algorithm versus fewer channels and a more sophisticated algorithm. ( more)
