In This Issue

Sunday, January 15th
immediately following the 10:30 service

This meeting is the only time during the year that we gather as a community and vote on things, hear reports, and discuss the
state of the parish.  We will distribute the 2017 budget, elect
new vestry members, and discuss the parish and the way
forward.  Meat will be provided and we ask everyone to bring a dish to share for the potluck.  We would love to have everyone attend!

Gary
Greetings in the Name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

This Sunday is special and exciting for a couple of reasons. First, it is our Annual Parish Meeting where we gather for food, fun, fellowship and business. Contrary to other denominations we have only one meeting of the parish each year. This is because the Vestry of the church conducts all business of the church up to and including the selection of the rector. Since the Constitution and Canons of The Episcopal Church were written at the same time as our country's constitution it is easy to see certain parallel in our polity (how we govern ourselves). The parish's input to the Vestry is your opportunity to have your voice heard through the people you elect to serve on Vestry. We do this at our Annual Meeting this Sunday so it is important that you join us. Additionally, you will hear reports on ministries, finances and Fr. Gary will share with us his "State of the Parish." Please join us.

Secondly, this Sunday is exciting because Bishop José has assigned The Rev. Cris South as deacon at All Saints. Cris has been worshiping with us for over six months and has gone through the appropriate checks and balances in our diocese to be assigned as deacon. Cris has been ordained about three years and comes to us from The Diocese of Hawaii where she served a couple of parishes. She moved to North Carolina to be closer to her family. Her passions are Outreach and Pastoral Care. Deacon Cris will preach this Sunday and will share with us parts of her life story and call.

Some of you may be asking if Cris' arrival affects Martha being with us. The simple answer: No! Martha remains an essential part of the ministry team here at All Saints and the assignment of Cris will allow both Deacon Martha and Cris to support one another, the parish and me more deeply. Thanks be to God!

Please join me in welcoming The Rev. Cris South into the All Saints Family!

May the Light of Christ shine upon you this Epiphany!

See you Sunday!

Blessings,
Fr. Gary+

*  Church Directory :  Available on the table in the Family Life Center.

*  Towel Ministry:  We are excited and thankful that Vic Cooper and Jim McCarthy have taken over the coordination of our Towel Ministry.  Please approach them and let them know your talents and availability when projects arise.

* Planned Giving: Programs for Outreach Ministries are an important part of our parish.  You can ensure the continuation of these programs by setting up an endowment or including a bequest in your will. The Episcopal Foundation of Western Carolina has set up "The Living Stones Society" to provide Education and training to all clergy and parishioners about setting up a program. For more information see Fr. Gary or call the foundation at 828-225-6656.

This Sunday's Scripture Readings

The Collect

A lmighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The First Reading:  Isaiah 49:1-7

Listen to me, O coastlands,
pay attention, you peoples from far away!
The Lord called me before I was born,
while I was in my mother's womb he named me.
He made my mouth like a sharp sword,
in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me a polished arrow,
in his quiver he hid me away.
And he said to me, "You are my servant,
Israel, in whom I will be glorified."
But I said, "I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely my cause is with the Lord,
and my reward with my God."

And now the Lord says,
who formed me in the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him,
and that Israel might be gathered to him,
for I am honored in the sight of the Lord,
and my God has become my strength--
he says,
"It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to restore the survivors of Israel;
I will give you as a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."

Thus says the Lord,
the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,
to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations,
the slave of rulers,
"Kings shall see and stand up,
princes, and they shall prostrate themselves,
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."

Psalm 40:1-12

1 I waited patiently upon the Lord; *
he stooped to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the desolate pit, out of the mire and clay; *
he set my feet upon a high cliff and made my footing sure.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God; *
many shall see, and stand in awe,
and put their trust in the Lord.
4 Happy are they who trust in the Lord! *
they do not resort to evil spirits or turn to false gods.
5 Great things are they that you have done, O Lord my God!
how great your wonders and your plans for us! *
there is none who can be compared with you.
6 Oh, that I could make them known and tell them! *
but they are more than I can count.
7 In sacrifice and offering you take no pleasure *
(you have given me ears to hear you);
8 Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required, *
and so I said, "Behold, I come.
9 In the roll of the book it is written concerning me: *
'I love to do your will, O my God;
your law is deep in my heart."'
10 I proclaimed righteousness in the great congregation; *
behold, I did not restrain my lips;
and that, O Lord, you know.
11 Your righteousness have I not hidden in my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your deliverance; *
I have not concealed your love and faithfulness from the great congregation.
12 You are the Lord;
do not withhold your compassion from me; *
let your love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever,

The Epistle:  1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind-- just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you-- so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

The Gospel: John 1:29-42

John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.' I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel." And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God."

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter).

Saint Day / Feast of the Week

Antony
Abbot in Egypt, 356

In the third century, many young men turned away from the corrupt
and decadent society of the time, and went to live in deserts or
mountains, in solitude, fasting, and prayer. Antony of Egypt was
an outstanding example of this movement, but he was not merely
a recluse. He was a founder of monasticism, and wrote a rule for
anchorites. Antony's parents were Christians, and he grew up to be
quiet, devout, and meditative. When his parents died, he and his
younger sister were left to care for a sizable estate. Six months later, in
church, he heard the reading about the rich young ruler whom Christ
advised to sell all he had and give to the poor. Antony at once gave his
land to the villagers, and sold most of his goods, giving the proceeds
to the poor. Later, after meditating on Christ's bidding, "Do not be
anxious about tomorrow," he sold what remained of his possessions,
placed his sister in a "house of maidens," and became an anchorite
(solitary ascetic).

Athanasius, who knew Antony personally, writes that he spent his
days praying, reading, and doing manual labor. For a time, he was
tormented by demons in various guises. He resisted, and the demons
fled. Moving to the mountains across the Nile from his village, Antony
dwelt alone for twenty years. In 305, he left his cave and founded a
"monastery," a series of cells inhabited by ascetics living under his
rule. Athanasius writes of such colonies: "Their cells like tents were
filled with singing, fasting, praying, and working that they might give
alms, and having love and peace with one another."

Antony visited Alexandria, first in 321, to encourage those suffering
martyrdom under the Emperor Maximinus; later, in 355, to combat
the Arians by preaching, conversions, and the working of miracles.
Most of his days were spent on the mountain with his disciple
Macarius.

He willed a goat-skin tunic and a cloak to Athanasius, who said of
him: "He was like a physician given by God to Egypt. For who met
him grieving and did not go away rejoicing? Who came full of anger
and was not turned to kindness? ... What monk who had grown
slack was not strengthened by coming to him? Who came troubled by
doubts and failed to gain peace of mind?"
