Join Canopy to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as part of a National Day of Service. Together, we'll plant 30 new trees and a number of landscape plants at Jack Farrell Park, and welcome East Palo Alto's incoming mayor, Larry Moody, with a ceremonial tree planting.

st Annual Palo Alto Mayor's Tree Planting and Awards Ceremony (a.k.a our Annual Party!)

Let's celebrate! All are invited to join Canopy's 21st Annual Mayor's Tree Planting and Awards ceremony (a.k.a our annual party!). This year, we'll plant two ceremonial trees: one in honor of incoming Palo Alto Mayor Greg Scharff, and one in honor of retiring Palo Alto Police Chief Dennis Burns.
Following the ceremony, we'll enjoy a reception in the Mitchell Park Community Center's El Palo Alto room and present the
2017 Canopy Tree Awards.

Join Canopy and expert arborist
Jess Running, District Manager for Davey Tree's Menlo Park office, on a New Year's stroll through the urban forest of
Old Palo Alto.
The walk begins at
Gamble Garden's back entrance on Churchill avenue, between Waverley and Cowper.

Tree Walk: Edible Urban Forest
Saturday, February 11, 10am - 12pm
Begins at Johnson Park in Palo Alto
Corner of Hawthorne and Kipling
(Ends at Gamble Garden)
Join Canopy, an expert arborist, and the food gurus of
Slow Food South Bay on a special tree walk from Johnson Park to Gamble Garden. Along the way, we'll explore the surprising variety of edible products that trees provide and learn tips for successful harvesting.
Please note that this is a
one-way tree walk. The Canopy van will be available to shuttle attendees back to the starting point as needed, about 1 mile.

Palo Alto urban forestry program recognized with national accreditation
At the Palo Alto City Council meeting on January 9th, the Council and urban forestry staff were presented with a plaque from SMA for the city's outstanding achievement.

New permit to enforce Palo Alto's Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance
Effective January 1, 2017, Palo Alto will require a new permit for building projects subject to the state's water efficiency regulations.
The City of Palo Alto Development Services Department announced that it now requires an Outdoor Water Efficient Landscape Permit, which will be issued separately from the Building Permit.
The City of Palo Alto adopted the state MWELO in February, 2016. It applies to all projects that require a permit, plan check, or design review, and which include a large enough landscape area to trigger the requirements.

Master Resource Conservation Course
Eight-week course starts Wednesday, 2/8/17
The
Master Resource Conservation Course is a no-cost, 8-week, in-class course provided by San Mateo County. Participants gain in-depth knowledge on sustainability topics including climate change, energy efficiency, water conservation, solid waste management, transportation, and more.

Winter storm takes a toll on iconic trees, locally and beyond
During any big storm, it's inevitable that some old or weakened trees will not survive.
Over the weekend, as an
atmospheric river flowed over California, we said goodbye to several notable trees, both locally and farther afield, that have graced our landscapes for many decades and centuries--and even millennia!
The death of such venerable trees can feel like the end of an era, but it's also an opportunity to plant new seeds. By replenishing lost trees in our urban forest, we can ensure future generations have iconic trees of their own to treasure.

New maps compare tree density in 10 global cities
The MIT Senseable City Lab has come up with a new way to visualize tree cover in 10 big cities across the globe, including Sacramento.
Treepedia uses images and data from Google Street View to create a rating of a streets "greenness" based on how many trees it contains. They call it the "green view index," and they've created interactive maps for cities from Seattle to New York to Tel Aviv.
