Message of the Month:
Happy New Year!

Happy 2017 everyone!  We are excited about all the new possibilities that come with a new year.  We currently have openings for school trips, whether a one-time field trip, or a weekly group session!  We are also hiring occupational, physical, and speech therapists to take on a few clients during the week or on Sunday's.  Spread the word!

We wish the best for everyone in the new year!!

Horse of the Month
Small Fry

Small Fry began his career with us in 2004.  He came to us a furry, fat, and frightened horse from the gr andfather of one of our clients.  The driver who trailered him to us announced, "You have to  keep him now because there's no way we can get him back into that trailer!  It took hours to get him here!" He immediately showed that he was a natural at therapy, being relaxed and loving with all kinds of children - wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches are no problem for him!  He especially enjoys the attention and love he gets when our school groups come to visit.

Small Fry has helped many to overcome their fear of horses and develop a closer relationship with a horse.  Through his willingness to work in the round pen, he is an excellent teacher for learning about body language and how to communicate with and care for our equine friends.  Small Fry still is nervous around tall men, an anxiety he has had since he first came to us, but this has decreased over the years.  His anxiety helps  clients to view and address their own anxiety, so it's a real win-win situation.

Just as our clients continue to work on their personal issues, Small Fry does too.

Staff Member of the Month
Susan Silva

Susan is our newest therapist; she has been with us since September of this year.  Susan Romano-Silva received her Master's of Science in Occupational Therapy from Columbia University in 1996.   Susan is state licensed and school certified in NJ and NY.   She is an AHA Level I Therapist.   Susan has 20 years of pediatric experience in a number of areas including pediatric rehabilitation, early intervention, school therapy, private clinics, and pediatric intensive care.   Susan is certified in infant massage and pediatric NDT (neurodevelopmental therapy).   She has received training in sensory integration, pediatric vestibular, vision courses, feeding therapy, manual therapies including craniosacral therapy and myofascial release, therapeutic listening, interactive metronome, and kinesio-taping.

She currently provides occupational therapy services at NYU Langone Medical Center, where she has been involved in pediatrics and numerous roles as managerial, clinical specialist and spasticity clinic, upper extremity prosthesis, handwriting programs, and peer mentor roles through her career.   She is currently a senior clinician at NYU in pediatric acute care.   In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children engaging in sports, reading, and playing with their dog.
Hero of the Month
The Kid's Wish Network

Neve was chosen as Hero of the month for November 2015!  Neve is a delightful 7 year old who came to Rocking Horse Rehab in May 2015 to work on her social skills, attention, and focus.  Initially fearful of the horses in the barn, Neve has embraced this opportunity and arrives each week excited to visit "all my friends in the barn, especially..." and then she starts naming them all - yes, all fifty of them!  We have worked on appropriate conversation skills, knowing when it's best to be quiet, and how to follow directions and complete tasks.  She is also working hard to manage her sensory issues as sudden sounds can startle her.  Neve strives to work independently but we knows that she sometimes needs to ask for help.  Her progress has been a pleasure to watch.
Volunteer of the Month
Christina

Christina was an RHR intern this semester.  She is an occupational therapy student at New York University's Steinhardt School.  She came to Rocking Horse Rehab to complete her Level I fieldwork.  Over the course of her fieldwork, Christina got to work with our occupational therapist, Susan, and our speech therapists Jenn and Fiana.  During this time, she was not only able to learn a different approach to therapy, but was also able to use her own knowledge to assist our therapists.

Christina was a wonderful, knowledgeable intern who we were lucky to work with during her fieldwork!  We wish her good luck in her career!
