SWOT meeting!  February 10, 2017

The Barnabas Group mobilizes Orange County  Christians  to contribute their unique talents  and  resources to build the capacity of ministries  addressing local and international needs.

This SWOT will be supporting  The MEND Project ( www.themendproject.com ). The Mend Project is addressing challenges right here at home. The primary focus of their work is to shine light onto matters of Primary Abuse and the Double Abuse that often follows when victims reach out for help.

Overview: What is true and extremely damaging for most victims of Primary Abuse (adult, adolescent, or child physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, workplace abuse, any form of domestic violence, sex trafficking, bullying) is the Secondary Abuse, cultural or group such as (families turning away, pastors or persons of authority not listening, church or lay leadership not intervening, persons in the community placing unreasonable expectations or demands on the victim), which victims too often receive when reaching out for help. Primary abuse combined with Secondary abuse is what The Mend Project calls Double Abuse. The MEND Project seeks to educate, equip, and restore those impacted by Primary and Double Abuse, and do this through three different ways:

Awareness: Clarity is the first step towards healing. We bring clarity to victims of abuse, especially hidden forms by naming and defining abusive behaviors. We expose cultural blind spots that collude with and support Primary Abuse.

Models: We develop protocols for first responders teaching ways to interface with both victims and perpetrators to prevent Double Abuse while promoting clarity, empowerment, accountability and restoration.

Curriculum: We develop and implement curriculum for churches, NGO's, therapists, universities, and other first responders in this effort.

They operate not-for-profit under the guiding Biblical principle found in Ephesians 5:12-13: "It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible-and everything that is illuminated becomes a light."

They seek to bo ldly expose the hidden issues of Primary and Double Abuse in our culture, to break stigmas and eliminate taboo topics that are pushing victims back into further oppression as well as emboldening perpetrators. With this as their guide, they hold these four core values sacred:

- Listen Respectfully
- Strengthen Connections
- Proclaim Truth
- Do No Further Harm

The ultimate vision is to end Double Abuse. One way they hope to accomplish this is by implementing a viral launch strategy to name Double Abuse and begin to de-stigmatize these topics.

BIG QUESTION: How do we launch this ministry with a viral strategy to brand the name Double Abuse and to create a movement to de-stigmatize these topics?
