It's October - which means the pink ribbon is abound. It's an important time of the year as we are reminded about breast cancer awareness and screenings.

Memorial Sloan Cancer Center has released Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines, as noted below:

Women at average risk:
  • no symptoms
  • no history of invasive breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread beyond the milk ducts, or lobules); ductal or lobular carcinoma in situ (abnormal cells that are confined to the milk duct, or lobule); or atypia, which is also known as atypical hyperplasia (a form of benign breast disease)
  • no family history in a first-degree relative (parent, sibling, or child) and no suggestion or evidence of a hereditary syndrome
  • no history of mantle radiation (a radiation therapy used to treat Hodgkin's disease and some other conditions)
Women at above-average risk:
  • family history of breast cancer (for example, one first-degree relative - a parent, sibling, or child - who has had breast cancer)
  • atypia, also known as atypical hyperplasia (a form of benign breast disease), or lobular carcinoma in situ (abnormal cells that are confined to the milk duct, or lobule)
  • history of having been treated with mantle radiation (a radiation therapy used to treat Hodgkin's disease and some other conditions) before the age of 32
Recommendation of Memorial Sloan Kettering doctors:
The following breast cancer screening guidelines are based on four different levels of risk. They recommend that women in any of these categories perform an optional monthly breast self-examination (BSE) beginning at age 20. They also advise women to be aware of changes in their breasts. If you are at higher-than-average risk for breast cancer, you should discuss with your doctor whether you should have additional screening tests.

If you are at average risk:
  • annual clinical breast examination (CBE) beginning at age 25
  • annual mammography beginning at age 40
If you have a family history of breast cancer:
  • CBE every three to six months starting at the same time as the earliest diagnosis in your family
  • annual mammography starting no later than ten years before the age of the earliest diagnosis in the family (but not earlier than age 25 and not later than age 40)
  • consider annual MRI and mammography at alternating six-month intervals
If you have ever been diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma in situ:
  • CBE every three to six months
  • annual mammography beginning at the time of your diagnosis
If you have had mantle radiation:
  • CBE every three to six months beginning at the time of your radiation treatment
  • annual mammography starting eight years after your radiation treatment
  • consider annual MRI
Every day a friend or loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer. It is important to get screened to ensure optimal health.

ACOG Statement: Ob-Gyns Applaud U.S. Congress for Passing Zika Funding Package, September 29, 2016
Washington, DC - Thomas Gellhaus, M.D., President of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), released the following statement regarding the passage of a Zika funding package by the U.S. Congress:

"The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) applauds the U.S. Congress for last night's passage of a bipartisan, comprehensive Zika funding package. Congress has finally treated Zika like the emergency it is and shown the American people that it is capable of rising above partisanship for the health of its citizens.

"ACOG stands with peer organizations and government agencies in the fight to prevent and respond to the Zika virus and support the care and treatment of all people affected by it. Since earlier this year, ACOG has been insistent that Congress pass emergency funding to further Zika vaccine development, research and prevention.

While ACOG is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide ob-gyns across the continental United States and US territories with the most up-to-date information, the frightening reality is that there are still more questions than answers.

"The fight against the spread of Zika cannot be won without the resources to support responsive and proactive solutions. This comprehensive funding package is essential to our success and the health of women and babies.

"We now look forward to the Continuing Resolution (CR), which includes the emergency funding to fight Zika, to head to President Obama's desk to be signed into law."

Feel Better - Stress Less
A research team at Harvard found that mindfulness meditation can yoga-woods-woman.jpg change the structure of the brain.  Eight weeks of mindfulness-based stress reduction was found to affect the hippocampus and other areas of the brain which govern learning and memory and are associated with emotion regulation.  There were also decreases in brain cell volume of the amygdala, which is responsible for fear, anxiety, and stress.

Most importantly, the subjects reported a decrease in fear, anxiety and stress and an increase in an overall sense of well-being.
