Dear Saint Rose Families,

I hope that you enjoyed your snow/ice/rain day on Tuesday.  I subbed a few classes yesterday and between art projects the students filled me in on their day off.  Some went to Imagination Station, others to a movie, some did projects around the house, and some could not remember what they did.  We have one more weather cancellation day before we start to use Blizzard Bags.  I personally hope that is a day full of snow instead of ice.

Next Tuesday
is the Annual National Geographic Bee for students that qualified for the final rounds from grades 4-8.  This is a fun morning of geographic competition as students are questioned about such places at the Atacama Desert, the Irrawaddy River, or the Kamchatka Peninsula.  The rounds start with the geography of the United States and get progressively more difficult and global as we go.  Parents are invited to attend.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Bryon Borgelt
Principal

Middle School Ski Trip ~  February 2, 2017
**Registration and Payment WILL BE accepted through TOMORROW, Friday, January 13!**

The annual Saint Rose middle school ski trip is back. The purpose of the trip is to provide our students with the opportunity to try something new, have some fun and bond as middle school students. We will also connect the trip to our science curriculum.

Students will travel by Blue Lakes Bus for this one-day trip. We depart from Saint Rose School at 8:00AM and return around 7:00PM. Students need to arrive and be on the bus by 7:45AM. This is a perfect trip for beginners and more advanced skiers. Lessons are offered free of charge and the staff does a nice job of making sure the kids are ready for the mountain.  All students will be provided a lift ticket, rental, lesson, helmet and lunch. Parents may want to send extra money for snacks during the day as well as a quick stop at a fast food spot for dinner on the way back to school. Space is limited to 100 students.
Payment is due Friday, January 13, 2017.

St. Rose understands that skiing is not an interest that all of students share. Students that do not attend the trip will participate in fun activities at school.

Student Cost = $70       Chaperone Cost = $50

Nominate a Teacher!

Please take a moment to nominate a Saint Rose teacher that made a difference for you child.  Each year the Golden Apple award is presented to a select group of teachers from the Diocese. The teachers must be nominated by a parent, student or fellow teacher.  They must be a practicing Catholic, and have taught full time for at least three years at Saint Rose.  Ms. Lewandowski was nominated by a parent two years ago and was selected by the Diocese as a recipient. This a tremendous honor for our teachers.

CYO Corner...

The 6th grade girls team - Skeldon/Hoyt (pictured): Played a good game against St. Joan of Arc. The team's defense and teamwork was strong, and their shooting percentage improved greatly leading them to Pirate Win, 18-16. Good Luck this weekend!

The 5th grade boys team - Cavanagh (pictured): Had a good weekend with a victory vs. Lial with six players scoring. The team is 4-0 so far this season. Great job and Good Luck this weekend!
Thank you Mrs. Henry for coming to cheer them on in an earlier game this season!

THANK YOU!

THANK YOU for your donations for Heartbeat in December!

Saint Rose School collected 443 items that have been delivered to Heartbeat.  What a wonderful way to "Clothe the Naked" and honor our Lord who entered the world as a baby through an unexpected pregnancy!   Many families will benefit from your generosity!

Eighth graders Kyle Bernath, Brennan Vitaniemi, Ford Frick, and Isaiah Hickman (left to right in the photo) sorted and delivered the items to Heartbeat where they had previously had a tour.  Their actions interfaced with their eighth grade PBL service learning project.   They chose the topic of abortion and decided to counter abortion by promoting Adoption.  They connected with Spirit of Faith Adoptions in Sylvania and eventually wrote a   blog post
about what they learned.

Year of Mercy

Corporal Work of Mercy:
Visit the Sick
Spiritual Work of Mercy:
Comfort the Sorrowful
January Charity:

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio is committed to enriching the lives of children by providing comfort, care, and support to families of sick children in Northwest Ohio, Southeast Michigan, and beyond. When children are hospitalized, parents and families want to be nearby to communicate with hospital personnel and to comfort their children. These families can stay that the Ronald McDonald House without worrying about transportation, meals, and other daily chores that could limit their time with their sick children.

All funds donated at Masses and through alternate dress days in January will be donated to Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio. Thank you for your generosity.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the month of January, we will continue our Corporal Works of Mercy by concentrating on visiting the sick and comforting the sorrowful. Each grade level will be collecting different items to donate to the Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Ohio.  The Ronald McDonald House "provides access to health care and enables family-centered care."  It helps lessen the burden for families by keeping family members together to help kids heal and cope better.  It is a "home-away-from-home" for families who travel to Toledo for their children's medical care.  They are "committed to enriching the lives of children by providing comfort, care, and support to families in Northwest Ohio, Southeast Michigan, and beyond."
The following items have been assigned to each grade level to donate for this worthy cause:
Kindergarten Aluminum foil or plastic wrap
1st Grade Packages of Ramen noodles or Cup of Noodles
2nd Grade Clorox or Lysol wipes
3rd Grade Paper towels
4th Grade Toilet paper
5th Grade Kleenex
6th Grade Trash bags
7th Grade Sandwich bags (large or small)
8th Grade Dish soap or sponges
All mission money brought in on January Mass days will also be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
Let's all work together to show the Ronald McDonald House our giving spirit here at Saint Rose School!
Registration is now open for the 2017 Kids' Tech University (KTU) program at Bowling Green State University. The 6th year of this novel science outreach program brings children between the ages of 9 and 12 together with nationally and internationally recognized scientists who present exciting, interactive sessions.
The four-session program begins Saturday, Feb. 11, and ends Saturday, April 8 and is open to students who live within a one-hour driving distance of BGSU. To participate, children must be 9-12 years old as of Sept. 30, 2016.There is an $90 registration fee to participate. All students will receive KTU T-shirt.
Kids' Tech University is designed to spark children's interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by introducing them to scientists who work in those fields, and providing hands-on activities that let kids explore scientific concepts.
The morning sessions feature a talk and extended question period with the invited speaker. Afternoon sessions will include a series of hands-on activities relevant to the session topic that the children can participate in with their parents. This year's program will start with a CSI flavor with the first speaker being a research scientist who also works on the "body farm" at the University of Tennessee.
