*Children's chapel is an opportunity to proclaim the Good News to the children who attend the 9 a.m. service. Leaders sit on the floor with the children and use simple, yet essential, methods to tell the Gospel stories. We sing songs, pray prayers, and greet each other with the sign of the peace. Children's chapel also benefits parents who can give their full attention to the sermon, prayers, and confession while the children are away for the middle of the service. Breaking up the service is good for the children too! They get a chance to move and a change of scenery as well as direct connection on their level. Treble Choir members are always welcomed to join chapel too.

Icons and Candles

In the Southwest corner of the church you will see a new votive candle stand with four icons on the wall above it. Lighting candles in the presence of images of the Saints is an ancient Christian form of prayer. We have added it to our worship space for a number of reasons.

1. From time to time people come to the staff and ask us to 'light a candle' for a loved one who is undergoing a crisis, surgery, or at the time of death. Previously we had no place to do this and now we do ...  READ MORE

March for a Better America
Monday, January 16th
Deacon Carol Duncan invites all who are interested to come with her on Monday, Jan 16th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For the past several weeks, people of goodwill from organizations across the region have joined together as the MLK D.A.R.E. (Day of Action, Resistance, and Empowerment) coalition to prepare for our Monday, January 16th "March for a Better America" march and rally.

For anyone who wants to go as a group with Carol, meet at the information desk right above the tracks at Jefferson Station at 11 am to walk to 6th and Market where the rally begins. The march will gather at Independence Mall, specifically the president's house slave quarters, at 11:30 am. We march to Mother Bethel AME Church at 419 S. 6th St. We will hear the presentation of a 21st Century Declaration of Rights, a statement of basic human needs we all aspire to see fulfilled. We are called to state again the goals Dr. King articulated and that we must continue to strive for. The 21st Century Declaration of Rights calls on politicians, community leaders, and common citizens to support the basic human rights we cherish, such as affordable housing, health care, and quality public education for all. At this critical time, we cannot just say what we are against but must articulate what we work for.
Connect 8's
Introducing CONNECT 8's - regularly scheduled dinner groups of 8 people that rotate each time so you meet more and more members of St. Martin's. Dinner groups will be hosted in the homes of participants and will be easy to organize. Once we have enough sign ups the Hospitality Committee will post a schedule. The host will provide the entree and each guest will bring one part of the meal. Each gathering will include introductions, conversation, fellowship over dinner, and brief prayers at the end. The groups will be good for couples or singles, and if you cannot host you can team up with someone else as host. We recommend that families with children attend Parents Play Date or get a sitter (from our church list of great babysitters available from Rev. Anne!) if they plan to attend CONNECT 8's. Dinners will be scheduled the first Sunday of the month from March through May.

Start the New Year exploring the wisdom of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his reflection on the ten years leading up to 1943 and their meaning for him and for the church. Welcome to the Episcopal Church!
Newcomers Seminar
January 28th at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Library
Join the Rector for a freewheeling exploration of the Episcopal branch of Christianity . Your questions will guide the class as we discuss the way we worship, sources of teaching authority in the church, commonly held teaching and social ethics in the church, as well as how we organize ourselves and how one might get involved in a meaningful way. This new format is an experiment to see if we can make this orientation available to a greater variety of newcomers to our community. We will end our day with pizza for the kids and homemade soup and bread for the adults. Childcare will be provided in the Houston Room and we encourage families to attend, with or without kids.

When the City issues a Code Blue, organizations around the city like Project HOME help spread the word to get people inside, and you can help! On extremely cold nights, if you see someone sleeping outside, call the Project HOME hotline to notify them of the person's location, and they will send someone to come help the person find shelter. 24-Hour Homeless Outreach Hotline: 215-232-1984
