Natasha Trethewey, National Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner, to speak at Kennesaw State University
Please join us for the Honors 20th Anniversary Lecture as Trethewey speaks to Kennesaw State University students, faculty, and staff about historical depictions of race in the Americas and growing up biracial in the South. Reception and book signing to follow.

Born in 1966, Natasha Trethewey grew up in the south as the daughter of a mixed-race couple. Tretheway's parents divorced when she was six years old leading her to spend time in Atlanta, Georgia with her mother and New Orleans, Louisiana with her father. She was encouraged to read as a child which led her to study English at University of Georgia. Trethewey also obtained a MA in English and Creative Writing from Hollins College, and a MFA in Poetry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Trethewey has released several professional works including
Domestic Work (2000),
Bellocq's Ophelia
(2002), and Native Guard (2006), which won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. She followed these works with Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast (2010), and the poetry collection Thrall (2012).
Book clubs comprised of Honors students have been reading her works in preparation for her visit.

Opportunity to present at the Southern Regional Honors Council Conference
The Honors College is now accepting proposals from students who would like travel funds to present at the SRHC Conference in Asheville, North Carolina.
The conference will be held from March 30th-April 1st. Lodging, transportation, conference registration, and meals will be funded by the Honors College for up to six students presenting. To be eligible for this support, students must submit their proposals to the Honors College for review prior to submitting them to the conference.

Honors Club Pancake Fundraiser
Honors Club will be hosting a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday morning, Jan. 28th at the Kennesaw Applebee's location (2445 Mall Blvd NW, Kennesaw, GA). Money raised will be used for Honors club events and to support Honors student attendance at Regional Honors conferences.
Tickets are $5.00 and include 3 pancakes, 2 sausage links, and choice of beverage. Tickets are available for purchase from Honors Club officers in Willingham Hall, Suite 230 on the Kennesaw campus. Ticket purchases can also be arranged on the Marietta campus by emailing Nick Testin at [email protected]. Tickets are available from 1-11-17 to 1-24-17.

Molly Brodak, KSU Honors Faculty Member, Releases Memoir
Molly Brodak is the author of Bandit: A Daughter's Memoir (Grove Atlantic, 2016) and the poetry collection A Little Middle of the Night, winner of the 2009 Iowa Poetry Prize, as well as three chapbooks of poetry. Her writing has appeared in Granta, PEN America, Guernica, The Poetry Society of America, and Best American Nonrequired Reading 2016. She held the 2011--2013 Poetry Fellowship at Emory University and currently teaches the Honors Composition and Literature courses on the Marietta campus of KSU. She blogs about teaching and writing at sibilantfricative.wordpress.com.

KSU Library Research Award - win $500 and get published!
KSU's Library sponsors an Undergraduate Research Award with a $500 prize and automatic publication of your research in the
Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research. Honors students completing a major research paper or project, and especially those completing an honors thesis, are encouraged to apply! The contest involves submitting your research paper and writing a short essay about how you used library resources in your research process. For example, applicants might explain how library resources were used to select and narrow a topic, conduct keyword searches, and find and evaluate sources.
Applicants may be currently enrolled or recently graduated undergraduate students at KSU. The deadline for entries is Feb. 20th. See instructions and a sample entry from last year's winner at
