Rector's Reflections
Could the World Be About to Turn?

Our Hebrew Scripture reading Sunday is from Isaiah 61 and promises that the Messiah, the Anointed One will reverse the typical injustices of society. Our Psalm for Sunday echoes this as we hear the Magnificat, or Mary's song. As Christians gather in worship, we too join Mary in praising God that just such a reversal comes to the earth through Christ. We receive that mercy on Sunday through word and sacrament, and we pray to God to continue its transformative power throughout the world.

Our sequence hymn is The Canticle of the Turning, based on Mary's song from Luke: "My soul cries out with a joyful shout that the God of my heart is great, And my spirit sings of the wondrous things that you bring to the ones who wait. You fixed your sight on your servant's plight, and my weakness you did not spurn, So from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?"

Mary's response and the hymns refrain is full of hope and a call to join in the work of God in the world: "My heart shall sing of the day you bring. Let the fires of your justice burn. Wipe away all tears, for the dawn draws near, and the world is about to turn!" May you carry Mary's refrain in your heart and remember that Advent is a time of pregnant expectation for the revelation of the living and present Christ in each of us.

Waiting for the World to turn,
Bill +

The Second Sunday of Advent - December 10, 2017

Jennie C. Hennigar
The above photo was taken on Sunday, Dec. 10th

It was just a few minutes before closing, and Lord & Tailor was filled with holiday shoppers when I introduced myself to the volunteer working behind the desk.  When I explained that I would like to schedule a time to interview her for the E-News her arms were immediately thrust to the heavens, and she loudly stated, "Yeah! I made the E-News."  As a cub reporter, I found that endearing.

Jennie Hennigar has been attending All Saints since her move to the Alton area in June.

Jennie was born in the Bermuda Isles, and she still has a home on that idyllic British Island. She still has several siblings and many relatives that continue to live in Bermuda. Her descendants started the original school system in Bermuda in the 1700's.

Jennie received her undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.  Her dental degree came from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Jennie's dental career started at the University of Pennsylvania where she served as an Associate Professor, and Clinical Professor of Operative Dentistry.

Her next career move was to Boston where she served as Director of Dental Services at Longwood Health, Inc.  Marriage, four children and dentistry in Grand Island and Cheektowaga, NY  followed as she owned a general dentistry practice.

After returning to New Hampshire, she owned a general dentistry practice in Dover, NH that she eventually sold. Jennie briefly retired in 2010 after working for the Tamworth Dental Center in Tamworth, NH.

At this point, you're probably thinking that Jennie has had an accomplished but pretty normal dental career.   To that point, I would add that her career had prepared her for the next phase of her life.

Jennie's retirement had a short shelf life, as she entered the world of public health.  She served the Native American Ojibwa Nation in Ogema, Minnesota; the Native American Navajo population in San Fidel, New Mexico; and most recently she finished a 6 year commitment to the Native American Choctaw Nation in Talihina, Oklahoma.  At the end of that commitment Jennie again retired and returned last June to the Alton area.

When asked if she was a cradle Episcopalian, Jennie stated that she was a cradle Anglican (Church of England), as Bermuda is still a British Colony.

Jennie recently  began  thinking about  exploring the feasibility of using her dental skills working part time in Publlc Health.

The two photos of Jennie reveal much more than a radiant smile.  In the top photo, Jennie has just finished worshipping God and her smile reveals a gratitude and thanks for that sacred experience and communion with God. In the bottom photo, Jennie's smile reflects the good feeling of serving God thru her ministry at Lord and Tailor.  That is a wonderful combination that occurred from the mid afternoon of one day thru the morning of the next day.

We selfishly hope that if a part time public health dental job surfaces that it will be in the New England area and she can continue to worship and serve God thru her ministry at All Saints. Jennie's five grandchildren would concur as they love to visit their grandmother and enjoy the water activities on Lake Winnipesaukee with her.

We are grateful for the gifts and ministry that Jennie brings to All Saints.

Hope House
CHRISTMAS OFFERING HOPE HOUSE, WOLFEBORO

Most of us at All Saints will be with family and friends this Christmas season but what if things have not gone well this year and you find yourself not able to make the mortgage payment with only one source of income?   This is where Hope House becomes your ONLY HOPE for getting back on track.

We are so lucky to have Families in Transition (FIT) coming to Wolfeboro to manage Hope House for us.  When our Mission Outreach Team asked Maureen Beauregard, the president of FIT how Hope House could use our Christmas Offering to help, she immediately said "FOOD FOR THE RESIDENTS!"   The food budget for the year is estimated to be $25,000 so unless we receive some very large donations, we will be only providing a portion of the funding needed. Hope House will provide continental breakfast, bagged lunches, and a warm nutritious dinner each night.

There will be Christmas Offering envelopes available or one can send a check with "Christmas Offering" in the memo line or make an electronic donation on our web site:
All Saints Web Site, press DONATE tab. For more info about Hope House:  Hope House Information

Messiah Performed by the Clearlakes Chorale
The Messiah photos were taken Saturday night, Dec. 9th.

The following are some of the comments that were heard during the Saturday evening intermission of  Handel's Messiah:  " Outstanding; the orchestra is fabulous; inspiring; an emotional and spiritual experience; the sounds from the chorale completely filled the sanctuary; Andy Campbell does a terrific job bringing everything together; the chorale has never sounded better."

"The custom of standing for the "Hallelujah" chorus originates from a belief that, at the London premiere, King George II did so, which would have obliged  all  to stand."   Messiah official program

Even though the Hallelujah Chorus that was recorded by the Morman Tabernacle Choir is not as good as the performance by our Clearlakes Chorale it is still spiritually uplifting to hear.  Click on the following link to hear this remarkable music written by George Frideric Handel:  Hallelujah Chorus
In the above photo All Saints choir member Ian Whitmore and All Saints Choir Director Holly Simons pose for a photo after the performance

In the above photo, are All Saints and Chorale members Peter Walker, Anne Bullitt, and Lee White.

Music Corner
From the Music Corner:

In this Advent of 2017, we are inserting some deeper meditation on some ancient texts The O Great Antiphons with the familiar hymn "O Come, O Come Emmanuel".

In the ancient church the seven "Great O Antiphons" were used as the antiphons for the Magnificat at Vespers, one antiphon* during each of the last seven days of Advent.  They later formed the basis for the familiar Advent hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" based on a Latin hymn from the 12th century and translated by John Mason Neale (1818 - 1866).

This Advent season at All Saints we will be using our candlelighting time at all 6 services to read and reflect on one aspect of Almighty God through the recitation of an antiphon text, followed by a poetic meditation, and concluding with all of us singing together the related verse from our beloved Advent hymn,  "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel".

It is our hope that these meditations, combined with the congregational singing of this familiar hymn, will deeply bless you as we journey through Advent together, praising and pondering the mysteries of the Incarnation.
(*antiphon:   a short chant in Christian ritual, sung as a refrain)
