Here is the first edition of EduChat in 2017. In this edition we bring you an update on 5 countries that Sannam S4 supports education clients presently namely, Brazil, China, India, Malaysia and UAE. In the year gone by, countries like India and China have performed well in the Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings and countries such as Brazil and Malaysia have strived to improve the quality of Higher Education within the country. Malaysia, with its education Blue Print 2013-2025 and UAE, by investing USD 2.7 billion, are eyeing to become the hubs of international education. Towards the end of last year, we have introduced two new sections in the newsletter. "Research and Partnerships" is where you will see the Indian partnership opportunities that could be explored and the second new section is "Tête-à-tête" where every month we will introduce you to one of our exemplary staff members. The United Kingdom Home Affairs Committee launches an inquiry into developing a consensus on an effective immigration policy

The Committee wants to hear people's views - on their concerns - about immigration at a local and national level, and their suggestions for what approaches the Government might adopt to build consensus on how future immigration to the UK should be dealt with.

Just days before Christmas, Brazil's senate has passed the constitutional amendment to cap the Federal Public spending for the next 20 years. To reduce the deficit in the country's budget and to curb the inflation, Temer's Government had to resort to this unfriendly decision. The amendment will come into effect from early this year which will exclude education and healthcare. The austerity applies to these two sectors starting 2018. Brazil featured among the worst in world education evaluation, meaning, innovative and low cost mechanisms to improve the quality of education is a need of the hour for this country.

China continues to dominate in the world education rankings yet again, with 52 universities in the top 300 and 6 in the top 10 of the Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies rankings 2016. Not only is China improving in the world rankings but it also is strengthening its ties with one of the favourite study destinations of its students. China and UK have focused on 6 areas to strengthen their collaborations: basic education; language teaching and assessment; technical and professional education and training; sports education and training; higher education (including quality assurance) and exchanges.

Mr. Prakash Javadekar, Honourable Union Minister for the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has decided to appoint a new committee to draft the National Education Policy. TSR Subramanian Committee, which was commissioned by the former Minster of MHRD, Ms Smriti Irani, had submitted a report on reforms to be made to the National Education Policy and the highlights were made public to attract suggestions from various stakeholders. But the newly appointed minister, Mr. Parkash Javadekar, has announced that the new panel, headed by an eminent educationalist, will be in place very soon and this panel will draft the new National Education Policy in the next 3-4 months.

In addition to the education Blue Print 2013-2015, Malaysia is also working on strategic partnerships with countries such as China and Algeria to increase the education exchange and to expand cooperation in Higher Education. However, subject experts recommend introducing the concept of autonomy into the Malaysian Education System to improve the quality of education within the country. Both the high level committee formed in 2005 and the recent education Blue Print 2013-2015 support the recommendation. The Government of Malaysia has been mulling over this recommendation but no concrete amendment is in place so far.

The global cues have fueled the UAE's ambition to become the international education hub in the near future. The country is taking big strides in that direction by investing USD 2.7 billion in the education sector alone. "The UAE is increasingly gaining global importance as an ideal destination for investments in higher education as the Gulf nation gives top priority to education as a means to achieving economic success and development," said Prof Abdul Sattar A Al-Alusi, president and CEO of Emirates College for Management & Information (ECMIT) during a presentation at the Oxford Summit of Leaders 2016 summit held at Oxford, UK. Such huge investments in the past have proven to be bearing fruits for the desert country, two UAE universities featured in the top 100 of the Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies rankings.
