A Message from the Dean...

"What are you Looking For?"
"What are you looking for?"-John 1:38

"What are you looking for?" is a question that each of us needs to ask ourselves. Really, how can we know we've found something if we don't know what we're looking for?
In our Gospel reading today, Jesus asks that question of these early would-be disciples. Notice in our reading that John gives six names for the person they are looking for. (Can you find them all?) In this passage from John's Gospel, John wants us to know that for these early seekers-and for us today-is a search for Jesus.
St. Augustine of Hippo says the same thing at the beginning of his masterful book Confessions: "Thou hast made us for thyself, O God; our souls are restless until they rest in thee."
What are you trying to rest your soul in? Anything short of Jesus is really bound to disappoint.
I love the story of the miser who was on his deathbed. He was pondering his approaching death and was dismayed by what he'd always heard about dying, namely, "You can't take it with you."
So, he utters a fervent prayer to God, and, to his surprise, he gets an immediate response. A booming voice fills the room: "I've heard you, my son. You're right, that is generally our policy; you brought nothing into this world, and you can take nothing out of it; but in your case we're prepared to make an exception."
The rich man immediately calls his broker, and arranges for the purchase of as many gold bricks as can fit into a sack, that can in turn be placed into his casket.
The man dies, and finds himself standing before St. Peter at the gates of heaven. Peter takes one look at the new arrival, and gets on the intercom to call the boss. "There's a guy standing here with a sack full of gold bricks, wanting to take them into heaven," says he.
"So?" says God. "I told him he could."
"Whatever you say is fine, boss," says Peter. "What I can't figure out is why he'd want to come up here with a sack of paving stones."
