Stories Needed!
Alyssa and Arlo
When Arlo and I met Jeanne Morris at the front office of Smyrna High, she told me that Alyssa, one of her students who has Down syndrome, was afraid of dogs. "She might stay in the back of the classroom," she said. "But she's also very excited that Arlo is coming." It was 9:30.

Ninety minutes later, Alyssa held onto Arlo's leash, helping me walk him back to the office to sign out. She was wearing a huge smile.

Foot by foot and minute by minute, Alyssa had moved from the back of the room to the middle. There, Jeanne let me know that Alyssa would like to touch Arlo. She was hesitant but gentle, and it was a privilege for me to see the courage it took for Alyssa to reach out. Then she held Arlo. Then she held Arlo again. Our whole visit to this friendly special ed classroom was wonderful, but watching Alyssa and Arlo come together may have been the high point.

Gift Wrapping at Barnes & Noble a Jolly Success!
A great big thank you to everyone who helped with this year's Barnes & Noble gift wrap project.  This took an army of volunteers (both 2 and 4-legged) and our PAWS volunteers made it happen!  Thanks to everyone who shared the opportunity with friends, family and co-workers!

Here are some amazing statistics from this year's event:
  • Total number of volunteer shifts filled:  389
  • Total number of volunteer hours served:  1,353
  • Total amount of donations raised:  $13,545.08
WOW - that is fabulous AND...

We also had a wonderful presence in our community.  So many shoppers stopped by the table to learn more about PAWS for People, receive some much needed pet therapy during holiday shopping, or sign up to be a future volunteer.

In addition, many folks expressed their true appreciation for an experience that they had with the programs of PAWS for People.  People that our pet therapy teams have visited at hospitals, schools, assisted living facilities, DeStress events, libraries, rehab programs and others, stopped by to share with our volunteers the impact that this had had on them and their families.

A huge thanks to both the Concord Pike and Christiana Mall Barnes & Nobles for serving as the host sites for this heart-warming project that was both a fundraiser and a friendraiser for PAWS for People.
