BC REMEMBERS DR. KING WITH A ‘DAY ON’ & ART OF PROTEST
Some BC students chose to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday with a "Day On," instead of a “Day Off." Organized by our Director of Community Action Matt Budd, the day included a discussion on the history of hunger in the U.S., causes of food insecurity, and how young people can be change makers by using their voice and social networks. Hunger Free America’s CEO Joel Berg spoke to students and encouraged them to set an action goal and make a difference.

Upper School students spent the week remembering Dr. King with a celebration and exploration of the art of protest. Through music, graffiti walls, protest signs, post-it walls, and performance art, students expressed their feelings on the current political climate as well as honored the work done by past Civil Rights heroes. ART HISTORY CLASS STUDIES GUSTAV KLIMT
Mr. Swift’s Upper School Art History class visited the Neue Galerie to view Gustav Klimt’s, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, after learning how Maria Altmann successfully fought for the rightful return of her family’s painting from the Austrian Government after being seized by the Nazis in 1938.

Students are currently learning about the development of Christian art during the Byzantine Empire. Klimt’s use of gold was inspired by ancient Byzantine mosaics, where the luminous effect of gold was used to symbolize the divine and spirit of Christianity--exemplifying how many artists look to the past for inspiration.
