Teaching Children their value as Children of God
Principal's Notes
Dear parents and families,

Sunday, January 29 - Saturday, February 4 is Catholic School's Week and we will be celebrating daily our love for Catholic Education, especially at Saint Michaels. Please be sure to look below for a schedule of the week which includes Masses, assemblies, a canned food drive, and dress down days. This week was planned with the Student Council and will be a wonderful, uniting, and celebratory time for our school.

If you are interested in Financial Aid for the 2017-2018 school year, please be sure to attend FACTS Night tomorrow night from 6:00-7:30. Mrs. Carlstrom and Mr. Muha will work in the cafeteria with anyone who needs assistance signing up and applying for Financial Aid. There is only so much aid to go around, so applying is incredibly important to ensuring your family receives assistance. Please read below for more information and what you need to bring.

This is a reminder that Scantron Testing began this week and will run through the first week in February.  The results of your child's January Scantron Performance Series assessment will be included with the second quarter report cards. Please note that this is the second assessment of the school year. A baseline test was administered in September, and a final test will be administered in April. Attached is a letter from  Leslie Lipovski, Ph.D., Curriculum Coordinator for the Arlington Diocese Office of Catholic Schools.  The letter provides a brief description of each score on the results report. Click  here  for the complete Diocesan letter.

Another McDonald's Spirit Night is on the horizon. Please join us on Wednesday, January 25th from 5:30-7:30 at the McDonald's in Bradlick Shopping Center for some fun and of course the free dress down pass!

Due to the Inauguration on Friday, January 20th, the school will be closed that day

God bless,

Daniel Cinalli
Principal

During the winter months, you may have noticed a slight increase in your weight. Here are several ways extra weight can sneak up on you and how you can make some adjustments in order to fight off those extra pounds:

  • FALLING FOR "DIET" FOODS. Low-fat products entice people to eat more than they should.  They tend to eat a larger portion than if it wasn't low-fat.  As a result, they eat more calories than they need.
  • DISTORTING PORTIONS. Larger bowls, packages and servings can lead you to eat more than what is appropriate.  To eat and drink less, try using smaller plates, bowls, and glasses along with similar serving dishes and utensils.  Take one serving at a time from large packages, then remove the packages from sight.  When dining out, share dishes with your dining companions.  Also, downsize snacks and fast food.  A study in the Journal of Nutrition, Education and Behavior had movie-goers eat from either a medium or large tub of popcorn.  Those with the larger tubs ate 45% more.
  • SLEEPING LESS THAN 6 HOURS.  A lack of sleep can cause an increase in the hormone ghrelin, which tells your brain that you are hungry.  It also causes a drop in leptin, the hormone responsible for signaling when you are full.  Therefore, it is important to make an earlier bedtime a priority.
  • LETTING YOUR CABINETS OVERFLOW. Does your pantry look like it could serve 15?  If it does, then trim your shopping list.  Also, if you stock-pile food, then many food items are left outside the cabinets, causing family members to see and consume it more quickly.
  • RACKING UP SCREEN TIME.  The more you sit, the more you will gain.  When at work, try to take as many "walking" breaks as possible.  Also, cut down on after-work and weekend use of the television and computer.
