6-figure technology grant possibly largest ever for Townsend Elementary
by Ryan Kryska | [email protected]

VANDERCOOK LAKE, MI -- Officials at Townsend Elementary School are beaming with joy after receiving word about a grant they've been working on since April.

The Vandercook Lake school is getting $104,505 for technology, which Assistant Principal Shelley Mannor says might be the wealthiest grant in school history.

"It was Santa coming early," she said. "It's going to mean the world to these kiddos."

The grant allows the school to purchase 240 Chromebooks, which are to be used on eight portable carts, and 91 desktop computers.

Fifty-five of the desktops are going into two computer labs for the kids and 36 are for professional staff, Mannor said.

The Chromebook carts provide a versatile way of using laptops for learning, inside and outside of the classroom.

This new technology goes right along with the school's choice to move to online assessments this spring, something most school districts are already doing, Mannor said.

The school received a letter of eligibility from the state for the Technology Readiness Infrastructure Grant (TRIG) last spring. Mannor then sent out surveys to students and teachers and put together a proposal.

"It was kind of us wanting to go big or go home, we are very happy," Mannor said. "This grant will provide technology into the classrooms at a greatly increased level and impact all of our students in grades K-5."

datahubMichigan Data Hub Update

The Michigan Data Hub team has been hard at work over the last couple of months. Below are a few of highlights from this time period. Be sure and check if your school's vendor is on this list and follow up with the Data Hubs team with the contact information listed below to get more information.
  • By the end of December, 54 districts were live with data in the data hubs. Due to a number of SIS systems now being able to integrate, we expect that number to grow steadily over the second half of this year.
  • PowerSchool has added support for sending grade and transcript data to the data hubs.
  • Edupoint has corrected an issue where data was being sent to an incorrect school year in the data hubs.
  • Skyward is now integrated with the data hubs using an API, rather than by sending XML files.
  • Infinite Campus has begun developing integration with the data hubs. Weekly status meetings are being held during the development process. It is expected that some integration will be available this spring with full integration available this fall.
  • BrightArrow Alert and USA Scheduler are two certified integrations that can be used right away. Visit our Connected Systems page for links to the vendor websites.
  • Integrations are ready for district testing for DIBELS Next, PELI, SWIS and Edify. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested in piloting these in your district.
  • SchoolZilla is beginning development of data hub integration for their data warehouse and visualization product. They are offering 6 months free to interested districts that would like to pilot test the system and the data hub integration. Visit this link for more information.
Other points of interest:
  • Dashboards are now available for districts who have data in the data hubs. Initially, the dashboards serve as a way to evaluate the data for quality. As districts feel their district dashboard is ready for use, they can then be made available to district staff. We plan to do some dashboard webinars in the near future.
  • A significant amount of development is underway for the data hubs. Visit our Timeline page for details of what is underway and when it is expected to be available.
  • We have presented "Roadshows" at a number of ISDs where we combine an overview presentation with actual configuration of SIS systems as a training for local districts. If you would like a roadshow at your ISD, please contact [email protected] and we will be happy to schedule that.

If your district has interest in participating in the data hubs, please complete our Sign-Up Form to start the process.

SpeakUP
It's Time for Speak Up in Michigan!

Participate in  Speak Up and learn what K-12 students, educators, and parents have to say about educational uses of technology in your schools and home!

What is Speak Up?
Speak Up provides an easy way for students, parents and educators to participate in your local decisions about technology, as well as contribute to the state and national dialogue about educational technology. Since 2003, Project Tomorrow has collected the viewpoints of students, educators and parents - the Speak Up dataset represents the largest collection of authentic feedback from these key educational stakeholders.

Want to share more information with your district?
Download our  Step by Step Participation Guide  - great for school/district leader meetings, as a promotional tool for districts to send to school administrators unfamiliar with the project or as way to get parents involved.
