FROM THE BILGE
by Paul Kaplan

Over the years I've heard KKMI occasionally described as "the place where the gold-plated racing sailboats go", implying that's the only type of boat we work on. Yes, we do have a strong following among racing sailors but this has little to do with our ability to make a sailboat go faster, which we do know how to do. What this does have everything to do with is our core belief in delivering every customer great value, which in our view is of paramount importance, regardless of what type of vessel you own or how it's used. HOW DO YOU CLEAN TEAK DECKS?

How do you clean teak decks?

To clean your teak decks - start with West Marine's environ-friendly, or similar boat soap in a bucket and fill ¾ with water. Add approximately a ½ of TSP(Trisodium Phosphate - you can get this at West Marine or any hardware store) to this mixture. Make sure the TSP has dissolved into the water (can sit on the bottom of the bucket) and scrub the deck with a soft scrub pad. We recommend you use a 3M product called Doodlebug. There are several levels of softness in these pads; the white is the softest, which is what you want to use. .   Read more.

NAME THIS PART

NO WINNERS THIS TIME!
A few good guesses - failed prop shaft, head waste pipe, electrolosis... but no correct answers. Remember! You have to play to win! Check out the trivia question in the "From the Bilge" article for more chances to win!

What is this? You are looking at a broken rudder post. Ouch!

How did this happen? In 2014 " Sweet Okole, a Bruce Farr 36' sloop was 156 nautical miles from finishing the Pacific Cup when things went terribly wrong. The stainless steel rudder shaft sheared in half, just above blade.

What is most notable? There is the evidence of rust where the rudder post broke. This indicates the likelihood that the post had been cracked for some time, well before the point of failure. (See enlarged photo of break) By the way,  Sweet Okole sailed in the Pac Cup again this year with her new rudder and took 2nd in her class!

Lesson learned? Removing your rudder and carefully examining the post, including the bearings -  top, bottom and any points of contact - should be part of your comprehensive maintenance plan. Above all, if you are planning on going offshore or sailing in heavy conditions AND you don't know when the rudder was removed and examined, this is a MUST DO item.
