SEATTLE: REDEFINING DRAMA, THE FUTURE OF THEATRE

In some quarters, there is a view that theatre is a dying art form. After a particularly challenging and revelatory year of racial violence, gender disparity, and political upsets, what exactly does it mean to be a dramatist and theatre practitioner in 2017? What are the responsibilities of the modern theatre artist? How do we shape our craft and our stories to reflect the times, and to extend theatre's longevity?

Join us for a panel discussion with local writer, actor, and arts activist Sara Porkalob, the Intiman Theatre's Andrew Russell, and Washington Ensemble Theatre's Bobbin Ramsey as we dive into a fierce conversation touching on many relevant topics: Gender and racial equity in the theatre, cultural appropriation in storytelling, the future of theatre and technology, and the emergence and significance of shows like Hamilton, Sweat, Vietgone, Eclipsed, and Dear Evan Hansen.

Toward the end of the meeting, local Dramatists Guild ambassador Andrew Creech and regional rep Duane Kelly will shift gears and share an experimental participatory idea for a portion of our 2017 meetings, and we would like members' feedback about this idea.
