Next SafeZone training to focus on sexuality and gender identity
SafeZone Advance Training will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 11:30 a.m. in TC 118. The discussion will focus on "Creating a Better Understanding of Sexuality and Gender Identity," and will be presented by Dr. Brandon Haddock, coordinator of Kansas State University's LGBT Resource Center on the Manhattan Campus. All students, staff and faculty are invited to attend.
The purpose of the SafeZone program is to provide campus "safe zones" where students can safely go for support or assistance. By placing the SafeZone symbol on their office door, desk or backpack, SafeZone allies signify that their space is a safe place for students who have been affected by any type of issue.
To become a SafeZone Ally, you must attend SafeZone introductory training and a minimum of one SafeZone advanced training session each academic year. Upon completing the training, individuals will receive an "Ally Packet" that includes resources, information, SafeZone logos, and much more in connection with being a SafeZone Ally.

Active shooter training to be offered Jan. 30
What would you do if the Polytechnic Campus was threatened by an active shooter?
To assist faculty and staff with a proper and safe response to a threat on campus, Officer Moreland from the Salina Police Department will be conducting active shooter, or ALICE, training on Jan. 30. There will be two available training times - 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. - in the College Center Conference Room.
If you plan on attending, take time to review the active shooter information linked below, and give a few minutes of thought to what you would do to protect yourself and/or your students or co-workers; planning ahead of time may save a life.
Also, if you are concerned about a Kansas State Polytechnic student's wellbeing, complete the Student of Concern form using the link below. Academic and Student Services can reach out to a Polytechnic Campus student who seems to be having difficulty and intervene before things reach a crisis level.

IT department gives helpful reminder of campus phone features
The Kansas State Polytechnic phone system has many capabilities that users may not be aware of. Here are some of the features you might find useful:
- Call waiting allows you to be notified of an incoming call while your phone is in use. You can place a call on hold while talking on the other line and switch back and forth between them. Call waiting can be deactivated if specifically requested.
- Call forwarding causes calls to your phone to be automatically transferred to another local on or off campus number. When a call is forwarded, your phone will ring with a short ring. You cannot answer the call if it is forwarded. Forwarding does not prevent you from making outgoing calls.
- Call hold lets you place a call on hold in order to make another call. When the second call is finished, you can return to the first one.
- Call conferencing allows you to be connected to two other parties on or off campus in a three-party conversation.
- Automatic callback allows you to be notified when an on-campus number is no longer busy.

SLC to air Presidential Inauguration for campus
Students, faculty and staff are invited to witness a new recorded moment in our nation's history this Friday with the swearing-in of the 45th president.
The Student Life Center will be airing the Presidential Inauguration on Jan. 20, starting at 11 a.m. The i
nauguration events include the administration of the Oath of Office, followed by the Presidential Inaugural Address and the inaugural parade.
The televisions in the K-State Cafe will be tuned to the Presidential Inauguration as well for those attending the SGA Welcome Back luncheon.

Technology faculty tour Wichita State University's new Innovation Campus for inspiration
 Faculty members mainly in Kansas State Polytechnic's engineering technology and technology management programs took a trip south last Friday looking for inspiration and new ideas for their own classrooms and labs.
The group of 12 toured Wichita State University's new Innovation Campus, primarily the experiential engineering and makerspace building. The space is set up in a way that encourages hands-on learning with project-based education - something Kansas State Polytechnic programs have been focusing on for years.
The facility allows WSU students to develop ideas into new products and take them to market.
A few of the building highlights include a makerspace, a 3-D print center, business incubator and accelerator spaces, and the WSU Ventures office to offer advice on patents and marketing.
Dr. Kurt Barnhart, associate dean of research on the Polytechnic Campus, also attended the tour and said, "
WSU is engaging a new paradigm of community and industry engagement and we went to learn how we could make something like that work here."

UAS program provides safety tips for drone hobbyists
With the number of unmanned aircraft, or drone, purchases by hobbyists estimated at 1.9 million last year by the
FAA, Kansas State Polytechnic's UAS program
wants to provide beginner pilots with the important basics of proper use and safety.
Spencer Schrader, a senior in the UAS program and a flight instructor, says safe operations are a necessary focus for every unmanned pilot, from hobbyist to student to professional, because the industry is still developing, which means untested technology and ever-evolving guidelines.
"The world of unmanned aircraft, or drones, is still relatively new and some standards in technology either haven't been set yet or continue to mature," Schrader said. "Following fundamental safety precautions can help mitigate deficiencies that could be encountered with the aircraft itself or during flight operations. Safety is a top priority in the UAS courses offered at Kansas State Polytechnic and we're proud to be able to share this insight with hobbyists to make a positive impact on their flying experience."
The first rule for hobbyists to remember is the FAA requires them to register their aircraft. All drones that weigh between .55 pounds to 55 pounds - even those purchased for recreational use only - must be catalogued on registermyuas.faa.gov.
It only costs $5 and takes about 10 minutes, which could save hundreds of dollars in fines.

Congratulations to 'Student of the Month' Jason Nowak!
I would like to send a high-five to senior Jason Nowak for being named "Student of the Month" in the office of international programming, housed on the Manhattan Campus.
Last spring, Jason studied abroad at Nagoya University in Japan and has used his international experiences to be an excellent advocate for studying overseas, particularly with Polytechnic students.
This semester, Jason has volunteered to serve as Study Abroad Mentor on campus, and on his own time, meets with students who are interested in gaining international experiences.
