Last Monday, December 11, members of Energy's National Honor Society (NHS) and students visited Berry Elementary School for the second year of teaching and fun. Each person was given a bag full of resources by Junior Achievement to teach children about different topics. Junior Achievement is an organization that aims to inspire and inform youth to succeed in work and life by providing the knowledge and skills needed for economic success, future plans, and academic and economic decisions. With this in mind, Energy students went out to teach students from kindergarten through fifth grade about communities, careers, businesses, and the government as it is important for children to be aware of the functions of our surroundings and how they will one day contribute to society. Additionally, Energy students played interactive games and had a wonderful day with them. NHS hopes to continue working with Junior Achievement next year. Elizabeth Kim said, " This is my second year doing this and it's really fun because you get to interact and teach children about useful topics."
Since Energy's InvenTeam received the $9,000 grant from Lemelson-MIT, the club has met every Thursday to discuss traveling plans to EurekaFest, revamped the club constitution, designed t-shirts, purchased important invention components, fundraised money, and initiated the building phase. Recently, the Arduinos, viscometer, thermoelectric tiles, heating pads, and motor battery arrived, allowing them to commence work on their biodiesel product, The Slushbuster. They are excited to continue their journey as they build their prototypes.

Due to the expensive costs of traveling to EurekaFest in June, they are fundraising to help as many members go to MIT. They predict they will need $14,000 to pay for the remaining costs for extra members not covered by Lemelson-MIT. The team is currently fundraising by selling drinks during lunch on Thursdays and breakfast tacos on Fridays. Next semester, they are planning on selling t-shirts to fundraise as well.

In addition, the team has created a GoFundMe account for the trip, found at Energy IHS to Eurekafest, open to any donation from the public.

Above all, the Energy InvenTeam is enthusiastic about getting the team to EurekaFest, working on their invention, and collaborating with companies.

Most schools have a deadline on or before January 1st, which is less than a month away. By now, you should have submitted your Dean Recommendation Packet to your dean so they can ensure your information on Naviance matches that on your applications. Be sure to request letters of recommendation at least two weeks in advance. Also, be sure to complete your FAFSA application, in order for colleges to determine your financial aid package. Finally, make sure you are completing scholarship applications and meeting scholarship application deadlines. It is imperative that you stay on top of your college game so that you are prepared for your future post-graduation.
