Building the Heart of Successful Schools Highlights

Thanks to those of you who joined us December 7-8 in Appleton for the BHSS Conference!   If you attended, please take 3 minutes to provide feedback on the conference:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BHSS2017 .   Presentation slides and handouts from many of the sessions are now available: http://www.wishschools.org/resources/BHSS.cfm .

A few of my favorites were:
1. The Compassion Resilience Toolkit, shared by Sue McKenzie from Rogers InHealth.  I liked her definition of resiliency, "the ability to be optimistic in and imperfect world."

2. Understanding why a kid is exhibiting challenging behavior is one of the most important parts of helping him or her. Ross Greene has tools to use with students on his website:  https://www.livesinthebalance.org/  under "paperwork" including the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ALSUP) and the  Problem Solving Plan .

3. The pre-conference on Human Trafficking was eye opening.  Some helpful resources to get started learning about the topic are available on the Wisconsin Anti-Human Trafficking website.  The Wisconsin Child Sex Trafficking and Exploitation Indicator and Response Guide should be consulted if you have concerns that a child or youth you have contact with is being sexually trafficked or exploited.

Mark your calendar for next year's conference on December 6-7, 2018, at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. 
A call for sectional proposals will be distributed in March 2018.
Lost in School Book Study
February 2018

This guided online book study is intended to provide a forum for school leaders to explore, in theory and in practice, Dr. Greene's Collaborative Problem Solving approach to challenging behavior. Over a four-week period from February 1 to February 28, participants will become familiar with, reflect upon, and critique this "enlightened, clear-cut, and practical alternative" to conventional school discipline.   Link to flyer.
Title IV, Part A Update

From the DPI's website: The screens for Title IV, Part-A are in development and are estimated to go live in January/February. A separate notice will be sent through WISEgrants when the screens are completed.

Title IV, Part A is a newly enacted grant for 2017-2018, known as the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grant. Title IV-A is a flexible block grant that authorizes activities in three broad areas: access to a well-rounded education, improving school conditions for learning to ensure safe and healthy students, and improving the use of technology to improve academic achievement and digital literacy. Read More on the DPI's Webpage.
Tobacco is Changing-
New Videos

Electronic cigarettes. Little cigars. Sweet candy flavors. The next generation of addictive tobacco products is here, and most of them don't look anything like a pack of cigarettes. Tobacco has evolved so fast, it's tough for parents to recognize tobacco when they see it-and even tougher to talk to your kids about the terrible damage tobacco products can do.
Get to know the new face of tobacco. It's the first step to helping your kids stay healthy and tobacco-free. You can also also view other Tobacco is Changing videos at the  Department of Health Services YouTube page. These videos are great to share with parents and caregivers.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training of Trainers

March 19-23, 2018, CESA #4 West Salem


Together with the DPI, the WISH Center is holding a Youth Mental Health First Aid TOT at CESA #4 in West Salem on March 19-23, 2018. Participants must complete the application process and attend all 5 days of training.
