Alberta should hedge its resource revenues
There is a way to tame energy-market volatility

The Alberta government posted a $6.4-billion deficit in fiscal 2015-16, and is predicting a final deficit of almost $11 billion this year. This in a province that had no debt in early 2015. While it still has one of the strongest balance sheets in the country, the numbers illustrate the ongoing problem of the province's heavy reliance on the crack cocaine of the fiscal world: resource revenues. They made up 30 per cent of the province's revenue in 2011-12 and have averaged 26 per cent over the past 35 years. In real terms, resource revenues plummeted $6.5 billion last year, and made up just 5.7 per cent of total revenues. It's no way to run a budget.

But how to get off the roller coaster? Diversify the economy, sure, if possible, but there's no denying the power exerted by the province's natural endowment. Alberta has tried a rainy day contingency fund, but that is subject to political expediency and is expected to be drained this year.

5 Things What Trump may mean for  Alberta
FIRST POSTED: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2016 05:32 PM
   CALGARY SUN

This week's U.S. election result, which saw Donald
Trump become president-elect, could have far-reaching
ramifications north of the 49th parallel. Experts weigh in
on what Trump's possible policies could mean for
  Alberta.

ENERGY
Analysts and industry groups say Trump's election bodes well for efforts to improve access of Alberta crude to American markets, potentially reducing the discount local producers accept for their oil.

Trump said during the campaign he would approve Keystone XL, the pipeline that would deliver more than 800,000 barrels of oil per day from Western Canadian producers to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Still, there are fears that clashing climate change policies on either side of the border may hurt Alberta's oil and gas industry. Trump is not expected to introduce a price on carbon or proceed with methane emission reductions, while the Alberta and Canadian governments have adopted those very policies.

Industry backers fear that higher costs and tougher regulations in Canada will place domestic producers at a disadvantage over their American competitors... read more

We also commonly engage in charitable activities that focus on local needs.
2
The Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce is essential to the economic growth of our community; through making introductions, facilitating projects, maintaining data on the areas served and their economic climates and keeping abreast of pending development projects.
3
As a Chamber we use our influence to further business and commercial interests, especially if the government or laws threaten to impede the community's business interests. Appropriately, many consider our ability to influence government and elected officials one of its most important functions. Furthermore, SGCC has an interest in building and promoting local businesses in the hopes that the success of the business leads to prosperity in our community. In other words, this chamber is an advocate of the community at large.
4
We also circulate information about local and federal laws that affect community business. This indicates that monitoring regulatory activity that impacts local business is another primary function. In addition to gathering information, the Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce also offers our members tips on how to manage their businesses, especially in regards to regulatory changes.
